October swallowed two pills with a glass of water and climbed the stairs. She quietly snuck back into her bedroom, lifted the corner of the comforter and slid back into bed. She stretched languidly and settled herself in closer to Bam's side. Bam stirred and reached for her body as he opened his eyes.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." She said with a soft smile.
He shifted closer to kiss the tip of her nose and smiled back. "You didn't. I was enjoying watching you walk around the room naked."
October giggled. "But I'm not naked anymore." She whispered.
Bam ran his hands down the side of her body to reach underneath her tank top. "I know. Doesn't seem fair, does it?" He pulled her top over her head and threw it across the room. "That's better." He grinned and pulled the blankets back to expose her bare breasts.
"Bam!" she squealed and reached for the covers. He propped himself up on his elbow above her and fisted his other hand in her silken tresses. His kiss was gentle but not without heat. Just as his tongue slipped past her lips, she gasped lightly and he pulled away. "What's wrong?" He questioned.
October brought her hand up between them and curled her fist around the necklace he wore. "Your Hei matau." She replied. "It's cold." Bam rolled onto his back and hauled her body up the length of his to rest on his chest. "I didn't think you would still wear it." She said absently as she ran her fingers over the smooth bone pendant.
"I've never taken it off. It's supposed to ensure safe passage over water, right?"
October nodded. "It's kept me safe this far." She laid her cheek against his chest and continued to play with the necklace. "And good luck and fertility." She reminded quietly. Bam covered her hand with his to still it. "I was wearing it that night last June in the trapper shack." He mused. She hummed in response.
Bam took a deep breath and asked the question that had been on his mind since the day he arrived in her kitchen.
"Why did you continue with your pregnancy when you didn't know if I was coming?" He meant no disrespect. It was just a simple, honest question.
October was stock still for a moment. He squeezed her hand a little with his own and hoped she wasn't going to smack him.
"I never lost faith in you, Bam. I knew you would come for me." She whispered.
They laid together like that for quite some time when October finally spoke again.
"What do you want to do today?" October asked while smoothing her fingers through his long, silvery curls.
Bam was sure he had died and gone to heaven. Here was a woman, his woman, pregnant with his child, soft and sweet and warm and willing in his arms. There was only one thing left to say. He was silent for a beat, then he murmured into her hair. "Let's get married."
October stilled herself. In one short heartbeat she had a million thoughts race through her head and all of them came to the same conclusion.
"Okay." She replied.
Bam started laughing. "Is that a yes?"
October propped herself up on her elbow and looked into his eyes. "Yes."
Bam moved his hand behind her neck to pull her mouth to his.
