Bam sat on the bed and hung his head in shame. He was going to be a father and his first reaction had been borne out of fear. For a brief moment he had sounded exactly like his father and he hated himself for it. How was he supposed to be a good father himself when he had had such a horrible example to learn from? If October was prepared to do it all by herself, maybe the best thing for her and for the baby would be for him to just leave without so much as a backward glance. He looked at the floor, where his bag sat, still packed. It would be easy. All he had to do was slip out the back door.
A soft knock at the door stopped his thoughts. "Come in." He said loudly and immediately regretted how gruff he sounded.
October, clad in an oversized tshirt, opened the door and peered timidly into the room. She sucked in a breath and pressed her hand to her stomach. For the first time since he arrived, Bam noticed how pale and tired she seemed. The amount of concern that coursed through him caught him by surprise. "Are you okay?" He asked, this time much gentler with more than a hint of alarm in his voice.
"Yes, I'm fine." That easy smile that he had missed with all his heart graced her lips. "She's moving. Do you- " she stuttered. "Do you want to feel?"
Bam's eyes widened. He nodded but kept his hands in his lap. October came further into the room and sat down on the bed beside him so that her bare thigh brushed against his. When he made no move to reach for her, she grasped his hand from his lap and pressed it flat against her bump. "Did you feel that?" She asked peering up at him. He shook his head disappointedly.
She moved his hand to a different spot. "How about that?"
"No." He whispered and dropped his hands away from her body, his dejection obvious.
She moved further up on the bed and laid her head on the pillow. "Sometimes if I lay on my left side, she'll kick harder."
"She? It's a girl?" Bam asked.
October shook her head. "I don't know yet. I alternate between saying 'he' and 'she'. It's nicer that saying 'it'. Oh!" She exclaimed and reached out to him. "Give me your hand."
She lifted her shirt slightly and pressed his hand against her skin. This time he felt just an ever so slight movement like a feather waving underwater. His eyes lit up. "I can feel it!" He grinned.
October couldn't help but smile at his glee. "That's your baby." She whispered, and then her smile faltered at the memory of his cutting words. She closed her eyes and pushed the thought away, not wanting to let it spoil the happiness of the moment.
"Give me your other hand." She said gently. He did so and she moved it lower on her abdomen. "Did you feel that one?"
Bam murmured a positive response and stretched his body out on the bed so that he faced her. "When is the baby due?"
"Middle of February." She replied with her eyes still closed. "Might be a Valentine's baby."
Bam felt another movement beneath his palm. He slipped his other hand under her tshirt and followed the baby's movements with his fingertips. Soon, October's breathing became deep and rhythmic. Bam's eyes moved back up to her face. Both her hands were tucked underneath the side of her head and her full pink lips were pursed into an angelic pout. Bam lowered his head to place a kiss on her temple and then bent to place a kiss on her stomach. He knew that tomorrow he needed to grovel on his knees for the damaging words he had said to her earlier.
He lifted himself from the bed long enough to shuck his jeans and throw them on top of his still-packed bag. He wasn't going anywhere tonight except back to bed.
