"Oy! Kimmy K! Someone here to see you!" The foreman yelled up to Bam impatiently. Bam glanced over the edge of the roof and nodded. He returned his hammer to the tool belt slung around his hips, unhooked his lifeline and started to descend the ladder.
He had been working on the roofing crew for five weeks. It hadn't taken him long to prove himself a valuable employee. He was a strong, hard worker and willing to learn what he didn't already know. The other men on the crew, upon finding out he was in a reality show, had taken to calling him Kimmy K (after Kim Kardashian) and the moniker had stuck. Bam didn't mind. Getting a little good-natured ribbing from the guys on the crew only meant they liked him. Otherwise they wouldn't talk to him at all. He enjoyed the work. He was outside all the time, it was physical labour, which he liked and it kept his bills paid and his pride intact.
He, Matt and Gabe were sharing an apartment. Albeit in the same building as the rest of his family but it was his own space. Matt as Gabe had secured themselves similar jobs; Matt installing vinyl siding and Gabe working with concrete forms. They worked in the same subdivision of the city but because of the different stages of construction that each of their jobs entailed, never on the same house.
His days consisted of early mornings and long, hard days that left him physically exhausted. He returned to his apartment at the end of the day completely spent with only enough energy to shower and join his family for supper down the hall at his parent's apartment. Then he would return to his bedroom to call October's cell phone and hope that she was able to answer in whatever far-flung corner of the country she was photographing that week. More often than not his call was sent to voicemail and he would fall asleep wishing her voice was whispering in his ear.
Although the cameras had spent most of their time following Billy and Ami to medical appointments or Rainy and Birdie as they worked through Rainy's home schooling assignments or went on adventures in various parts of the city, about two nights a week, the cameras would join them at dinner as they would discuss their family's current situation, Billy's treatments and plans for return to Browntown as soon as possible.
Bear and Matt had both agreed to let the cameras follow them on the occasional errand or outing within the city limits. Matt had met a girl and the beginning of their relationship was well documented for editing into a future episode. Of course, not before she had signed release forms giving consent to
use her name and likeness on the show. And probably a cheque as well but Bam had never cared enough to ask.
Weekends had become the chance for the cameras that couldn't follow him to his real job to catch up with him. So far, they had followed him to the DMV, shopping for new work boots and standing in line at the bank. Not exactly riveting television but Bam tolerated the intrusion. He was fulfilling his contractual obligations by allowing them to follow him and so far they really hadn't interfered in his personal life.
Little did he know, that was about to change.
