October pulled the blanket up around Isabella's chin and stoked the fire in the stove. Despite the warmth of the season and the heat in the shack, she shivered. Bam had gone outside to be alone. She knew he needed time to think, time to process all that had transpired with Billy and Ami's visit. October wanted to go and be with him to hold him and comfort him but this pregnancy was proving to be even more difficult than the first. She couldn't remember the last time she'd kept her breakfast down, or her lunch for that matter. She was sure she lost weight again. She had pretty much just gotten used to feeling horrible all day, every day and she was only eight weeks into her pregnancy.
She shivered again as she turned down the lamp and crawled into the bed.
She fell into a fitful sleep as her mind played over the exchange she'd had with Billy that afternoon.
She didn't know how much time had passed when she heard the door to the shack being opened. Heavy footsteps shuffled inside and the bar was dropped into place. The smell of tobacco and liquor assaulted October's senses and she opened her eyes. The fire shone through the door cracks of the stove giving off a small amount of light, allowing her to see only forms and shadows. She drew in a sharp breath as she watched the familiar dark figure lean over Isabella's crib. The thin fingers of fear clutched around her heart. "Where were you hiding?" She whispered. Jaime's teeth flashed in the moonlight coming through the window as he smiled at her. "I've been here all night. Did you miss me?" Her mind was reeling. How was it possible that he was here in Alaska?
"She's so beautiful." The deep voice murmured. "Just like her mother."
Don't touch her!" She hissed. Her voice sounded off to her own ears
October wanted to call for Bam but not until he stepped away from the bassinet. Even then, she'd heard the door being barred, how much time would it take her husband to get to her? She sat up in the bed and backed into the corner.
"What's the matter, October?" He asked calmly. He stepped away from the bassinet and turned his full attention to her.
"It's you." She said plainly, inside her mind was scrambling to make sense of it.
"Yes it's me. You were expecting someone else?" He replied.
"What are you doing here?" She whispered. She tried not to let her fear show but she knew her voice had wavered.
"I've come to make love to you and fall asleep with you in my arms."
She heard the leather of his belt slide through the loops of his pants and the sound of his zipper going down.
"No." She meant it as a scream but it came out as a choked cry.
She remembered the knife that Bam had given her for their first christmas together. It was on the nightstand by the bed. She lunged for it as he knelt at the end of the mattress. She curled her hand around it and pressed the lock release. The familiar snick of the blade flipping open was all she needed to hear. She slashed the knife toward him. She wanted to hurt him in any way that she could.
He gave a surprised cry of pain as she felt the knife cut his flesh. But he was quick, even in the dark he overpowered her. She felt his one hand grip both her wrists and pin them against the headboard. He knocked them roughly against the wood and she heard the knife clatter to the floor.
"What are you doing?" He demanded as she fought him. She managed to wrench one hand free and she clawed at him with it. She heard him gasp as her finger nails dug deep tracks down his arm. "Stop it!" He growled again angrily as she continued to fight against him. The noise of their struggle startled the sleeping Isabella and she started to cry in her crib. October was distracted for just a moment but that was all the time Jaime needed. He tore the blankets off her body. The next thing October felt was a sharp stabbing pain at the base of her abdomen and warm sticky blood flowing from her body. She managed to scream Bam's name into the night before the darkness engulfed her.
