Once again, Bam was waiting for October in a yellow room in a hospital. Did all hospitals have the same sickening shade of yellow on their walls? And the same uncomfortable beige plastic chairs? He was confused. He was tired but most of all he was just numb. Life had dealt him another blow. Perhaps another example of the Brown luck? No. He stopped believing in bad luck when October agreed to marry him. It wasn't Brown luck. It was just life.
And death.
That was the part that hurt the most.
October'e eyelids fluttered open. She squinted painfully at the bright lights reflecting off the hard surfaces of the room. They were making her head hurt. She made a sound close to a moan which caused Bam to sit up straight in his chair. "I'm here." He whispered. Instinctively she reached for her husband. His heart clenched at the lack of warmth in her touch. She was immediately comforted when she felt his warm hand envelop hers. Her eyes opened wider and focused on his face. When she saw the neat row of stitches underneath his left eye she gasped. The events of the previous night came back to her . "It was Jaime." She whispered. She tried to lift her hand to his cheek but her intravenous tubes stopped her from doing so. She stared at them curiously before looking at him again. "He did this."
Bam brought her hand to his lips and kissed her fingertips as he closed his eyes and shook his head.
"No, baby. Jaime was never here. You were hemorrhaging."
"Yes, he was." She replied. "I saw him."
"You were sick." Bam explained. "You had a fever so high that you were hallucinating."
"No." She countered. "I saw him. In the shack." She spoke erratically. "He was touching Isabella." Then she sat up straight in the bed. "Isabella! Where is she?" She demanded.
Bam tightened his grip on her hands. "She is with Matt and Rainy. She is fine. No one has hurt her. Jaime was not here."
October grew more agitated. "He was here." She argued. "I saw him. I fought him. I cut him with my knife. I scratched his arm." Her eyes grew large as her gaze travelled from his face down to the wide bandage wrapped around his forearm. "He hurt me." Her voice rose an octave. "He-" her hands flew to her stomach. "No." She whispered. She shook her head emphatically. "No, no, no, no." She ripped the white hospital sheet off of her body and snatched at the tied of her gown. Bam covered her pale hands with his large ones.
"Stop." He said gently, his voice laced with anguish.
"No!" She repeated again. She covered her face with her hands. Bam stood from his chair and wrapped his arms around her body. The weight that she had lost in the past few weeks made her feel so small and fragile in his embrace. "No." She repeated, over and over, as if just saying it would make it not true. Sob after sob wracked her body as she slowly curled into herself. Bam stood silently by, smoothing his hand down her hair and pressing his lips against her temple, wishing he had the magic to take her pain away.___________________
