Matt sat up at the edge of the bed and looked for his discarded blue jeans. "Where are you going?" Amber mumbled sleepily.
"Thirsty." He replied. "You want anything?"
"Just you." She snuggled further down under the covers. "Hurry back, Matthew." She called to him. Matt smiled to himself as he closed the bedroom door. Amber only ever called him by his full name when they were making love. He had a feeling she would be using his full name at least one or two more times that night before they finally fell asleep. He crept down the stair quietly and entered the dark kitchen. The summer moon shone through the window above the sink casting an opalescent glow into the room. He filled a glass with water and leaned back against the counter while taking a drink. The distinct sound of paper crinkling made him stand straight up. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out the still-sealed envelope of Amber's test results that he had ripped in half to make his point. He knew he shouldn't read it, he knew he shouldn't get his hopes up. He told Amber that he didn't care what it said but still, the envelope taunted him. Just one look then he'd throw it away and never think about it again, he promised himself. He held the torn envelope in front of him and simply stared at it.
"Matthew?" Amber's voice came from the bottom of the stairs. He had been looking at the paper on the counter so intently that he hadn't heard her come into the kitchen. Shame immediately coursed through him. Only hours before he promised her that those test results didn't matter to him and now she had caught him with them in his hands.
"Amber." Matt whispered flatly. He closed his eyes and braced himself for her accusations to fly. Instead, she walked over to the island and pushed the papers on the counter closer to him. "It's okay." She continued. "Go ahead and read it."
Matt shook his head, still afraid to lift his gaze to hers. "Amber." He repeated. The silence between them stretched for several long moments.
Finally she spoke again. "Read it." She said firmly and pushed the paper closer to him again. "Hope for the best, prepare for the rest. Right?" Matt nodded solemnly. "I'm prepared." She said.
With slow deliberation, Matt picked up the two sides of the paper and laid them side by side on the counter top in front of her so she could be the first to read them. Tears sprang to her eyes as she scanned down the page.
Matt let out the breath he didn't realize he had been holding in. "It's okay baby. We will just try again. We will never stop trying."
Amber shook her head. "Matthew." She whispered through her emotions. His full name again, Matt's breath hitched. "Were having a baby."
