Bam came into the waiting room and collapsed into a chair next to his older brother.
"Is she awake?" Matt inquired gently. He could see the dark circles under Bam's eyes.
"She was. She's gone back to sleep, hopefully for a while. She needs rest." Bam leaned forward in the chair and rested his elbows on his knees.
"How did she take it?" Matt asked gravely.
"How do you think she took it? She feels betrayed by her own body." Bam scrubbed his palm down his face and held his head in his hands.
Matt put his hand on Bam's back and squeezed his shoulder. "Aw, man I'm sorry."
"The doctor said the foetus was only developed to five weeks." Bam said, slightly muffled by his hands over his face.
Matt frowned. "But you said October was at six weeks when you told me about it two weeks ago."
Bam nodded, still struggling to process the information the doctors had given him. "The baby was dead before we even knew about him."
The elevator at the end of the corridor opened up and Rainy stepped off pushing the carriage. She stopped in front of her brothers and pointed to the two styrofoam cups in the cup holders of the stroller. "I have a coffee or a hot chocolate." She paused and bent to pull a plastic bottle out of the bottom pocket. "Or a water." She hemmed on one foot and then the other, waiting for Bam to speak. Wordlessly, he took the bottle from her hands. Matt accepted the coffee while she took a sip of the cocoa. "I gave her a bottle and took her for a walk. She fell asleep in the elevator." She said softly to Bam. He extended his arm and took Rainy's hand in his.
"Thank you, Sweetheart." Bam murmured. "I really appreciate your help this week."
"Anytime." She said quietly, echoing the same sentiment he had when she thanked him for taking her with him to Calgary. Rainy bit her lip and looked very much like she didn't know what to say. "Can I-" she paused. "Can I see her?" She asked meekly, glancing towards October's hospital room.
Since they had returned to the bush, Rainy had taken up residence in her old bedroom in the upstairs of the main cabin. Matt had almost forgotten that in the time they lived in Calgary, Rainy had become as much a part of Bam and October's family as Isabella was. The four of them were even tighter then the wolf-pack, if that was at all possible. Bam stood from his chair and wrapped Rainy into a bear hug.
"She is going to be okay." He reassured her. Rainy sniffled as she nodded her head. "She's sleeping right now but you can go in to see her when she wakes up. I think she'd like that."~*~
A few days later, Matt and Rainy waited in the lounge again. Bam had taken Isabella in to have some quiet time with October. She had been in the hospital for two days and was slated to be released that afternoon. Rainy had mostly cared for the baby while Bam had stayed full-time at the hospital with his wife. Matt wanted to help with the baby and knew that he should have done a little more to help Rainy but he still couldn't bring himself to have anything to do with the little princess. Isabella still reminded him of everything that he couldn't have.
Matt hummed tunelessly to himself while Rainy dozed on his shoulder. He flipped through the same outdated magazine as he had a hundred times before over the course of October's hospital stay. Although he was falling apart inside, he had tried his very best to be the rock that Bam needed him to be.
Back home, Bear, Gabe and Noah were handling the shipping job that they had booked for that week. No one expected Bam to leave October, and though no one said it out loud, they all knew that Matt was too distracted to be of any use on the boat. He was too busy nursing his broken heart.
A familiar figure at the end of the corridor caught Matt's attention from the corner of his eye. He'd know that gentle sway of her hips anywhere. In less than a breath he was down the hallway and sticking his foot in between the almost closed elevator doors.
Ambers eyes widened as he poked his curly head through the opening and squeezed the rest of his body between the sliding doors. She took two steps backward, only stopping when her back collided with the inside of the elevator cab.
"I thought you left for Seattle." Matt said flatly.
Amber shook her her slightly and stared at the floor. "Not yet. I have a few things I need to finish up before I go." She held up an envelope in her hand. "Test results." She muttered.
"What do they say?" Matt asked, trying to hide the hope that swelled in his heart.
Amber shook her head. "What do you think?" She snapped and then immediately looked apologetic. "I'm sorry. I'm just tired of always hearing no."
Matt snatched the envelope from her hand, ripped it clean in half and stuffed it in the back of his jeans. "I don't care what they say. I just want you back."
She thought she could do this. She thought that she could leave him and go back to Seattle and let him live his life with some one else but it had only been two days and it had been pure torture without him. "I've made a pretty big mess of things." She stated. Tears pricked the back of her eyes and she blinked them back rapidly.
"No you haven't." He said gently. He stepped closer to her and grazed her cheek with his knuckles. "I know you're confused and frustrated. I know you're scared. Come back to Browntown. Come back to me." She hesitated to reply as the tears spilled over into her cheek. "I don't care if we never have babies. I just want you." She closed her eyes and shook her head. Matt pulled away from her and jammed his fingers through his hair. "I'm tired of hearing no too! I'm tired of all this bullshit coming between us!" Amber had never really seen Matt angry. To be honest, she was a little afraid. "I'm only going to ask you this one more time." He growled at her. Matt took her hand in his and lowered himself to one knee. "Please." He begged. "Marry me, Amber." His cornflower blue eyes bore into hers, pinning her to that spot. The elevator stopped and the doors slid open.
An elderly lady in a wheel chair gasped when she took in the sight inside the elevator. She grinned up at Amber. Amber glanced from Matt to the woman and then back to Matt. "Matt." She whispered with a bit of warning in her tone.
He shook his head and raised his eyebrow challengingly. "I'm not getting up until you say yes."
"Sir, we need the elevator." The nurse behind the woman's wheel chair said sternly.
Matt narrowed his eyes at him over his shoulder. "She hasn't answered my question yet."
"Are you crazy?" Amber asked with wide eyes.
Matt gave her one sharp nod and cracked a wide grin. "Yes!" He replied loudly.
"Sir." The nurse repeated.
Amber looked at the lady in the wheel chair again. She smiled back in encouragement. Her eyes were shining. Amber looked back at Matt. All that she saw was love reflecting back at her.
"Why not?" She shrugged and then broke into a smile. "Yes, I will marry you."
The woman sighed and clapped gleefully. "Sir." The nurse repeated, again, impatiently.
"Oh button up, Jarrod. We can take the next one." She admonished as she leaned forward in her wheelchair and pressed the button.___________
Happy Thursday My Pretties,
Oh, did I say you would have to wait another week for an update? Silly me. I eked a little time out of my schedule to write some more and I wanted to post it as soon as I completed it. Still only promising an update once a week - consider this a bonus!
