Chapter 40
The next day...
Derek and I are very handsy with each other through the course of the day. We don't mean to be but we are. Due to this, Derek and I are once more the number one conversation topic of the day. Surprisingly though, I don't mind us being the center of attention today because Clark is no where to be found. Thank God. I need a day off from having to see Clark's face. It helps me to temporarily forget about the breakup. I'm well on my way of getting over Clark thanks to my developing feelings for Derek. It's nice to be moving on, but at the same time I'm worried because it's Derek. Derek's my best friend. If we date and end up breaking up in a brutal argument, our friendship would be no more. I wouldn't be able to bear losing Derek. Derek's is far more important to me than Clark was.
Becky is acting as our bodyguard in case trouble happens to breakout. I doubt that it will be but it's better to be safe than sorry I guess. Since we have a sub this period, it gives us some free time to talk with one another. Becky smirks from me to Derek and back. "So are you and Derek A THING?" All heads turn to look at me and I put a finger to Becky's lips to silence her. "Quiet down please. I don't want all of these nosy people to know my business." She raises an eyebrow. "So are you?", she asks, though more quietly this time. Derek moves closer and puts a hand on my knee. "We're taking some time to figure out our feelings Becky." She nods understandingly. "That's a mature decision on you guys part." I step in and thank her for the both of us.
Silence looms over us for a few minutes before Becky breaks the silence. "Myra, Derek, can you promise me something?" Derek and I nod. "Can you promise me that if you two do decide to date but unfortunately break up, that we will all still be friends? I really enjoy hanging out with you both and I wouldn't want to have to choose sides." I pull her in for a hug while Derek pats her shoulder reassuringly. "We promise you that we will all still be friends no matter what happens and we will never ask you to choose sides.", we say in unison. We have our little moment and go about the rest of day being less emotional and sappy. There's only so much of that I can deal with a day.
