Chapter 64
The next day...
I'm in the middle of a fabulous shopping spree in Times Square when a random text from Becky stops me right in my tracks. The text reads: Myra, you need to call Derek NOW. He's been trying to get a hold of you all day.
Panic immediately surges through me. I hope that nothing bad happened to Derek. As I scroll through my unread test messages can log, I see that that I have six unread text messages and ten missed calls. Shit, shit, shit. Something's definitely wrong. One text in particular from his mom catches me eye. With shaky hands, I open it up. It reads: Hi Myra, I know you're away right now, but I have something that I need to tell you. Derek got hit by a car today. He's alive and able to talk, but he's in a lot of pain. He won' be able to go on any dates with you for a few weeks. He'll be in the hospital for another week. He told me that you'll be back in a couple of days. When you get settled back, we'd love a visit from you. See you soon Myra. - Mrs. Fernando
Tears cloud my vision and drip down both sides of my face. My baby is hurt. He got hit by a freaking car. I immediately speed dial his number. Derek picks up on the third ring:
Derek: "Hey baby."
Me: "You idiot! Why would you allow yourself to get hit by a car. I love you! I've never given you any reason to believe otherwise." My voice cracks. "I-I need you alive."
Derek: "Myra, relax. I'm going to be okay. I'm going to be around to bug you for a long time. All I have are some broken ribs and a broken leg. I'm lucky though, it could have been a lot worse than it was."
Me: "That's a relief. I'm still worried about you."
Derek: "Don't worry unless you have to, which you don't have to right now. Just promise me you'll enjoy the remainder of your trip and that you'll come visit when you get back."
Me: "I will try my best and I will definitely visit you when I get back. Until then, don't do anything stupid. I love you."
He chuckles into the phone.
Derek: "No promises there and I love you too."
I hang up the phone and try to do as Derek asked, which is to have fun, worry less, and enjoy the remainder of this New York City trip. I do some more shopping and it helps me to calm down a bit. Shopping is a wonderful thing, especially for clothes and books, my two favorite things to buy. Don't worry your pretty little head I bought plenty of both.
