Chapter 73
Two weeks later... The day of my birthday party...
I'm sitting in the bowling alley with my nephew Cody waiting for everyone else to show up. I know Becky's going to be the last one to show up which is completely understandable given what's going on with her (I still don't entirely know the details but I know it's serious). Becky told me that she'll tell me everything today, though she did tell me that she's in a wheelchair right now. Derek texted me a few minutes ago that he's on his way and I have yet to hear from Ted. I'm sure he's coming though. We've only hung out outside of school once but he doesn't seem like the type of person to blow me off without an explanation.
An hour later...
Derek and Ted have both arrived and Becky's going to be in a few minutes. We booked the bowling alley for the entire evening so there's no set time clock for her to get her. I told her to take her time. I'm just happy that everyone I invited is able to attend.
Fifteen minutes later...
Becky arrives with her dad pushing her in the wheelchair. I immediately dash over to her and give her a loving hug, though I'm carefully not to crush her given how fragile she is right now. As I take in the sight of her, I realize she's lost at least twenty five pounds and is quite pale. I also see that she has a wig on. My smile turns into a deep frown. "Becky... what's wrong?" Her dad waves at me and I return his wave. She watches him go before turning her full attention onto me. "I have Osteosarcoma." Since I'm taking Anatomy this year, I know exactly what she has. Osterosarcoma is bone cancer. Tears cloud my vision. "S-Since when?" Becky looks at me sadly. "Since the summer but it's gotten worse. I had once when I was a baby but it went away. I've been cancer free for fifteen years so I didn't think that it would come back... but it did." "I'm so sorry Becky. God I'm so sorry. You don't deserve this."
I burst into tears when she hugs me again. "I'll be okay. Nothing's going to happen to me Myra." I wipe my tears away and sniffle. "I hope not because I love you so much and need you around for a long time. You're my best friend." She puts a hand to my cheek and I close my eyes at her gentle touch. "And you're mine. Now stop crying. Today's your birthday party. I may not be able to bowl myself, but I'll still be able to eat and talk with you." Cody, Derek, and Ted all nod in agreement. Derek helps me get Becky situated down on the alley and we start bowling for awhile. Derek and I take turns bowling and sitting with Becky to keep her company. When we get tired of bowling, we sit around eating pizza and I open presents, all of which are so thoughtful. I may not be super popular, but I have a damn good group of quality friends and a boyfriend that I wouldn't trade for the world.
