Chapter Pi

Victor reached in his front pocket as he had done many times before. The pocket had almost torn because of overuse and there was a permanent crease from where the object was continually pushing on the cloth fabric. Victor pulled out a small box, about the size of a deck of cards and pulled out a small slender object. He put the box back in his pocket and put the cigarette up to his lips and held it in his mouth while he fished around in his pant pocket of his loose dark blue jeans. He gave up looking and switched to the pocket on his lab coat before finding the object he needed.

A small metal lighter was procured before it was flicked open with a snap of Victor's wrist. The flame ignited instantly and Victor felt a warm sensation on his lip as he brought the flame close to his cigarette and lit it. Another snap of the wrist quickly closed the lighter, extinguishing the flame.

Victor examined the old lighter, turning it over and over in her hands. It wore years of of wear and tear. There were small scratches all around and a small dent on the bottom where Victor had dropped it the first time his father had let him hold it. His father had given it to him a year ago, along with the smoking addiction. Victor had always told his father that he would die from the smoking. He hadn't seen him in so long that Victor thought he very well just might have been killed by the smoke and he wouldn't even known.

He slipped the lighter back into his pocket and breathed in a deep breath of smoke, relaxing. He slipped in his armchair. His head pounded, he hadn't slept in days. He reclined in his chair and relaxed his eyes, slowly drifting away.

Had his eyes been open he would have seen a flashing red light on his desk, indicating there was a call being placed. After several seconds of flashing, the light shut off and a loud ring resounded through out the room. Victor jumped, startled, his eyes flinging open. As an easily startled person, he had installed a light indicator on his desk, one that would silently alert him to an incoming call. After a few seconds of being ignored, it would ring, jolting Victor out of a workaholic state of mind to answer the call.

"This had better be important," Victor said, the call automatically connecting, his anger filled voice activating the small speakerphone on the desk. The next words were uttered by an old college roommate he had hired on his staff. He was brilliant and head of his research department. He was smart, but Victor didn't think that he could experience his full potential. Thats why he hired him right out of college.

"Sorry for disturbing you sir," David Card's scared nervous voice emerged from the speaker phone. He sounded like his normal nervous shy self but still had an air about his voice that sounded like he had big important news. Victor waited a moment before David's voice resounded through the room.

"We think we might have figured it out," David started. Victor waited for more to come but David's voice remained silent. David was never a man of many words. It frustrated Victor. David was always so vague. He wasn't very social either which is what Victor figured brought about the unclear nature. Victor sighed loudly, resting his head back on his chair and closing his eyes in frustration at David.

"For crying out loud David!" Victor almost yelled at the speaker, imagining it was David his words were directed at, releasing his anger at an inanimate object, the only thing that kept his rage down. "What is done? Finish a sentence for once in your life! Honestly, drive me insane with your," He said but then stopped in the middle of his sentence, his eyes snapped open, his brain registration what David was telling him.

"You mean?" Victor said, not even hearing what his own voice was saying.

"Yes," David answered.

"Its complete?" Victor babbled again.

"I assume so," David said, sounding preoccupied with something else. "It hasn't been tested yet, but I can assume its functional."
