The day and night passed on with the winds climbing unthinkable speeds and around supper time Elsa had to go out again and repair some areas in the walls. She feared the worst for some of the citizens and their poor conditioned homes so she opened the castle to who needed it, with the promise of a warm meal to fill their bellies. While people ate in the grand dining room Elsa was under top security for fear she'd be hurt while pregnant.
She sat alone in the bedroom, sitting on her beautiful layout chair and sighed, putting her book down beside her. She stood from the chair and looked out of her window. The trees were shaking and the winds screaming all around the castle, she shivered a little from the cold wind, somehow quietly seeping into her bedroom. That was odd, she thought, I never get cold. Elsa shrugged it off and thought she could be cold because maybe the baby was cold, he or she might not be immune to the cold like Elsa.
"Hm," Elsa said and turned away from the window, walking over to her fireplace and started making a fire to keep the baby warm. "That's better." Elsa said and pulled a chair up near the fire and stared deep into the flames.
"Queen Elsa." A guard came in and Elsa's head snapped over to him. Just as I was getting comfortable, Elsa thought to herself. "Princess Anna has requested to come in."
"You can let my sister in." Elsa stated, irritated that he'd even ask permission for Anna to come in. "Any of my relatives can come in when they please."
"Yes, Your Majesty. It was foolish of me to think otherwise." He said and bowed his head, turning back to Anna in the hallway.
"See! I don't need to ask permission. She's my sister!" Anna snapped angrily at the guard and came into the room, smiling over at Elsa. "Elsa! Hi," She smiled and shut the door. "Sorry if you heard that." She said and jabbed a thumb over her shoulder at the door.
"No, that's okay. I got angry too." Elsa said and Anna came skipping over and pulled up a chair near Elsa.
"A fire?" Anna asked, giving her a skeptical look.
"Yes, I stood over near the window and there must be a small crack somewhere because I got this shiver and actually felt cold. I figured it was because the baby is cold so I just started the fire." She shrugged and Anna nodded. She looked down in her lap and she held two books, one was old and worn but the other was made of black leather and looked only a bit used. "What are those?" Elsa asked.
"One is a book about spirits and the spirit world," Anna said but shrugged. "If there is one, y'know."
"And the other?"
"This is mother's journal. Gerda found it when I had her clean out one of the storage rooms." Anna said and handed Elsa the spirit book first. "Flip to the first bookmark." Anna told her and Elsa examined all of her little bookmarks wedged between the pages, there had to be twenty to thirty there. Elsa flipped to the first one and saw Anna had highlighted a few different sentences.
First one read, In the spirit world, spirits who have not passed onto Heaven can sit there in this middle space between Heaven and Earth. This middle is a way spirits are able to communicate with the living and the dead. Some spirits can leave clues or make sounds with objects to trigger the attention of a mortal. A spirit could be trying to communicate with family, friends or could be an evil spirit and try to get revenge.
"Anna," Elsa said and looked up to her. "I don't see how this is important?"
"I figured you'd say that... Gerda said she had never seen the journal before, even when Momma was alive. She had been cleaning out that storage room for days before she came across the journal and it was sitting where she already cleaned. Momma could have put it there for Gerda to find." Anna said and took a small breath of air before continuing. "In the journal Momma left a few letters to us and said she wanted us to read them when she passed away."
"What?" Elsa whispered. "Could I read the journal?" Elsa asked and Anna handed over the journal happily. Elsa held the firm leather bounded journal in her hands and felt a rush of emotions come through her. Mother held this same journal, Elsa thought.
"I'll leave you so you can read it." Anna said and stood from her chair, taking her spirit book and left Elsa to herself.
