"And I knew I wouldn't fit in the boat, so I gave Duncan my journals and I watched as they escaped. Once I escaped the fire,  Esme brought me here. She left maybe two days ago and hasn't come back. I thought I could climb down the building and find some help"

"Well, I'm just glad we turned up when we did" said Jerome. "If you attempted to climb down the building, you would have gotten extremely hurt"

Jerome Squalor, Esme's husband, was there the day of the fire. He was watching Count Olaf's trial, but he barley got out of the fire. After nearly a week in the hospital, his boyfriend, Charles, decided to bring him back to 667 Dark Avenue. Charles made everyone a cup of tea, and they asked me to tell them what happened.

Then they agreed that we needed to get out of there as soon as possible.

I grabbed my commonplace book. At the time, stairs were out and elevators were in. Which meant that taking the stairs would be less crowded, plus there was less of a chance that we would run into Esme.

But none of that mattered, the second we left the penthouse, the elevator door opened with a ding!

Esme and Carmelita were back, and they weren't alone.
