Chapter Nineteen

"Well if it isn't my favorite intern working with me today" Mark said as Alex and I walked over.

I smiled trying to be nice for Alex's sake. After all he wanted me to put in a good word for him.

"Dr.Sloan this is my boyfriend Alex. He's really interested in going into plastics" I said. Alex stepped forward to shake his hand.

"The boyfriend of my goddaughter better watch out" he said before smiling and ushering us to a patient.

"Alex was you're name? Can you get me a coffee. Bella you want anything?" Mark asked. I looked to Alex who looked pissed.

"No Dr.Sloan I got it. Let Alex help you" I said trying to switch positions with Alex.

"No don't be silly Bella, you're boyfriend should be getting me my coffee". I looked over to Alex and mouthed a Sorry before turning my attention back to the patient.

"Why do you have to treat him like that?" I asked once Alex was gone.

"He's got to learn, stop worrying about him. You're just like your father, always putting people before yourself"

"And how's that a bad thing?"

"I heard Addison got the brownstone and the Hamptons?"

"And I heard you slept in my father's bed next to his wife for two months" I snapped as Alex walked back in.

"It wasn't just me, I'm always the bad guy. But what about your stepmom?"

"Ex-stepmom and believe me she's dead to me. I'm off your service today" I said walking out right past Alex who had the coffee in hand.

"Bella" Alex called out

"Let her go, rule number one in plastics, don't be tied down" Mark said making me madder.

The rest of the day I shadowed my dad. We didn't talk much about our personal lives just kept the relationship professional. I was able to scrub in on a craniotomy and got to help.

Overall a horrible day turned into a good day.

The next morning Izzy has came back to work. She seemed excited but I think the adrenaline from working was keeping her mind occupied from thinking about the check.

Meredith and I were responsible for watching Izzy. She was going to be shadowing us today. We began our journey from the east wing to the west when Izzy collided into my dad.

"Sorry Dr.Shepherd" Izzy said. It was then I saw the weird look on Meredith's face. Standing right beside my dad was none other than my aunt Nancy.

"Meredith, Izzy this is my sister Nancy"

"Aunt Nancy nice to see you" I said grabbing her into a hug.

"Derek you did good on this one, except now mom is mad you're holding her back from visiting" Aunt Nancy commented. The two girls walked away leaving me stuck once again with my family.

"So tell me how's it being the intern?" She asked as we headed to get coffee.

"Good, lots of drama around here and yet I'm always involved somehow" I said making my dad laugh.

"You want on my service again? I have another surgery for 10 am scheduled" my dad asked giving me the look. He was trying to get rid of aunt Nancy for a while.

"I'd love to. I'll see you in a little bit" I said to her as we scurried off.

After scrubbing in on a successful surgery my dad and I headed downstairs to the main floor. As we got off the elevator we were called over to see Mark, Addison and my aunt Nancy.

"Derek, Bella" Aunt Nancy called waving us over. My dad walked away and I stood there frozen.

I smiled and walked over, trying to be happy in the moment. If this was a year ago and nothing had occurred the way it did. I would have been ecstatic but now I'm just miserable.

"You know your aunt was telling me you haven't called nana since you left New York" Addison said all mother like.

"Yeah I haven't had the chance"

"That poor lady loves you and you haven't called her" Mark asked.

"The kids miss you" Nancy said trying to change the subject.

"I'll make a trip home one of these days" I said before walking away.

I hurried off to the on call room grabbing my phone from my pocket and placing it to my ear.

"Hello?"

"Hi nana, it's Bella"

"Bella it's so nice to hear from you. How's dad doing?"

"We are both good. I miss you, I miss you a lot"
