Chapter Nine

I had woken up this morning having a weird feeling in my stomach.

No it wasn't me being sick, it wasn't almost like a nagging feeling telling me to stay in bed.

I looked over to see Alex still passed out. I slowly crept out of the bed and began to throw my clothes on. Just as I buttoned my pants Alex began to stir.

"Stay, I'll cook breakfast" Alex mumbled still half asleep.

"I'll see you at the hospital" I whispered leaning over the bed giving him a quick kiss.

I hurried home in a cab, taking the fast shower I could to rid my body of this feeling. I then threw on fresh clothes and drove to work.

"Shepherd, Grey we have an incoming ambulance. Go" Bailey informed us as we exited the locker room. We both rushed downstairs to the ER to find a EMT's hand inside a man's chest.

"Um, okay let's get him in a room" Meredith said. The EMT straddling the patient on the gurney. We brought them to a room where we were meet with Dr. Burke.

"Why is there a hand in my patient's chest?" Burke asked.

"I only did it to stop the bleeding. It's my third day as an EMT" the young girl explained.

"Okay we need to get this man in the OR now. Shepherd and Grey you can scrub in" Burke said.

Meredith and I headed to the scrub in room.

"I had this feeling today" Meredith said as she stopped scrubbing her hands. She placed the brush down in the sink.

"I had a feeling today too" I said, my body began to get all fluttery... nervous. I am never nervous expect for right now.

"It's going to be fine" Meredith said going back to scrubbing in. I kept repeating that in my head as well.

"You girls ready?" Burke asked. We both dried our hands off and headed inside. Dr. Burke was handed the blade and just about to make the incision when Karev comes urgently busting through the door.

"Dr. Burke I need to speak with you" Alex sternly said. He was clearly out of breath from running.

"Karev I'm in surgery" Dr. Burke responded still holding the blade just above the body.

"You want to speak with me sir" Alex insisted. My gut feeling came back, and this time stronger than ever. Dr. Burke handed back the tool and went to speak with Karev.

"He's cute" the EMT commented as we waited for the surgery to continue.

"He's my boyfriend" I commented back. Meredith gave me a look. "As of last night"  I whispered back. Dr.Burke finished talking to Karev and I could see him staring into my eyes as he closed the door.

They were filled with fear.

"Hannah what do you feel?" Dr. Burke asked the young girl. "Is it hard, like made of metal?"

"Dr. Burke what's going on?" Meredith asked but he ignored her.

"Yeah my finger tips are touching something hard" Hannah concluded. Karev looked freaked out and Dr. Milton the anesthesiologist began to panic.

"What's wrong?" Hannah asked.

We had never learned about this in medical school but at home growing up with doctors it's your worse fear. We mostly had a code black on our hands.

"Hannah don't move, don't move your fingers, your body, don't move any inch" Dr. Burke sternly instructed. Hannah's eyes began to gloss over in fear as panic began to set in.

"Dr. Shepherd can you come here". I walked over to Dr. Burke. "I want you to walk not run walk to the charge nurse and tell her we have a code black"

Fear paralyzed my body momentarily, my voice was lost. "Code black are you sure?" I asked.

"Tell her code black and tell her that I am sure and then tell her to call the bomb squad"

I walked out of the room and began to slowly walk to the charge nurse.

"We have a code black" I whispered. The charge nurse turned around.

"What did you say?"

"We have a code black and Dr.Burke said to call the bomb squad" I repeated. She quickly started somewhere, instantly our pagers went off signaling off the code.

"Bella, you can't go back in there" Alex said grabbing my arm as I was about to make my way back in.

"Alex who's going to help Burke? I'll be fine" I said planting a kiss on his lips. He looked upset and disappointed at my choice to go in there.

I waited by the elevator for the bomb squad. The arrived shortly after and began to instruct us.

"This floor was evacuated correct" The bomb squad leader asked.

"Yes, Burke is in OR 3" I explained.

"We have people in this room" one of the bomb squad members instructed. It was dad performing a craniotomy on Bailey's husband.

"You said this floor was evacuated"

"It was I didn't know" I explained. I was pissed off at how arrogant the leader was. I then noticed Dr.Milton walk out of the OR.

I walked in to find Hannah squeezing the breath bag.

"Hannah what happened?" I asked grabbing it from her.

"He left, he said he has kids" Hannah explained.

"Don't worry Hannah, I'm here" I said. Meredith walked in and Hannah began to panic. Meredith tried to calm her down but she insisted on pulling her hand out.

Hannah ran out of the room, and Meredith shoved her hand in. I continued to squeeze the bag, providing the patient oxygen.

"What did I do?" Meredith whispered
