An hour and thirteen minutes has passed since we began and my dad hasn't even started yet.
"The dura's opened. Let's get our first look at the tumor" my dad said.
"Wow that's wow" Jackson said. He scooted over so I could get a look as well.
"The vessels are way more intricate than what the M.R.I showed. There's no way I can get the tumor out without rupturing the one and killing them cord"
"So, uh, what do we do?" Jackson asked.
"If I start T-2, I could avoid hitting the feeding vessels, so maybe I should go lower?" My dad I muttered to himself.
"It does seem better" Jackson said. I lightly tapped him.
"He's thinking not talking ignore him" I said. Jackson shook his head understanding.
Ten hours later and we all were still standing in the same spot. My dad hadn't moved once.
"Dr. Shepherd" Webber said as he barged into the OR. The name calling caught my attention but it was most likely directed towards my dad.
"Dr.Shepherd" Webber repeated having more sternness in his voice.
"Am I to understand that you canceled your surgeries today to operate on a spinal cord tumor?" Webber asked radiating with anger.
My dad still in his own world ignored him.
"Dr. Shepherd" he repeated once more before exchanging a few words with him.
My dad pulled away from the microscope and agreed to end the surgery.
"Okay that's it. Let's close him up" my dad said.
Lexie, Jackson and I headed out of the OR feeling defeated. Me more so for my dad. He had hopes in removing this tumor but it just wasn't possible.
"That's it?" Jackson asked.
"That's it. I'm heading home. I'll see you guys later" I said.
My heart was beating rapid. I hated how I was falling head over heels for the new guy. It was like-like love at first sight. Something I hated to say out loud because love at first sight was never a good.
My mom and dad claimed to be love at first sight, Addison and my dad claimed to have love at first sight and my dad won't admit it but I think he fell hard and fast for Meredith when they first met.
It felt like love at first sight for me was doomed.
The next morning my dad paged us to a conference room where Webber and himself were already seated.
"You paged?" I asked.
"Lexie, Jackson, Bella sit down" my dad said. We all did as we were told.
"Okay Derek let's review. This patient understands what cutting the cord means?" Webber asked.
"The loss is function in both legs and possibly more?"
"We have to cut the cord to kill the tumor. There's no other way"
Webber sighed at my dad's comment.
"Okay. That'll only take an hour or two. You can have O.R. one. Hunt needs it right after so he'll have enough time" Webber explained.
