Today was the day of the solo surgery. We all gathered in the break room waiting around as Lexie tried to read the lips of Chief Webber.
One by one the interns came in with the choice of the chief's.
First it was Karev then it was Stevens. We all still patiently waited for the news when the next intern walked in with news that it was Grey. At the same time Bailey walked in.
"Come on this is bogus" Alex said frustrated that the answer kept shifting.
"You just figured that out? Steve is not a lip-reader. Non of the interns are lip-readers. You just have to wait for the attendings to vote just like we didn't when I won" Bailey said.
I let out a chuckle at the response Bailey gave.
"You won your solo surgery?" Yang asked surprised.
"Oh course Yang. Of course I won. I didn't cut L-Vad wires or put my hands in bomby cavities. I didn't have my family members watching my every move and I didn't have my interns running a muck" Bailey sassed as she fixed herself a cup of coffee.
Lexie comes running in practically out of breath. "It's done"
"Oh, whatever Hellen Keller" Alex said done with the games Lexie and the interns were playing.
"I'm serious. The chief sent me. They made their choice" Lexie said.
George who it was and Lexie pointed to Yang. We all looked around quite shocked since Cristina was out of the running in the first place.
Chief Webber walked in calling Cristina outside for a minute.
"That's not fair she was out of the running" Alex whined.
"Maybe Webber is giving her a second chance" Izzy said.
"Whatever" Meredith whispered trying to be supportive of Cristina.
"Let's go" Webber said peeking his head inside and waving us out.
We all gathered by the nurses station awaiting to hear about the solo surgery Yang was rewarded with.
"I am happy to announce that the first solo surgery will take place tonight and is a below the knee amputation, bone cancer. Mr. Collinsworth in 2212" Webber announced.
"No appy?" Meredith asked surprised.
"Saw action. Sweet" Alex rejoiced.
"Choosing who gets the first solo surgery isn't just about who has the best surgical skills or who clocked the most hours in the O.R. It s about the highest form of trust. The trust to put a patients life into on of our residents hands"
I looked around to see everyone intensely watching and listening to Webber.
"And for the first I can recall every single attending picked the same person. Dr. Yang. However, Dr. Yang is out of the running. She is going to pick the winner instead. She will announce her decision on the O.R board at 4pm. Good luck" Webber stated.
We all began to disperse when I heard my name called.
"Shepherd"
"Yes sir?"
"You will be with Yang today. Make sure Dr. Dixon is impressed. By the end of the day, I want that woman to be my next head of cardio. If she's not I know who to blame" Webber said sternly looking at Yang for the last part
I shook my head and looked to Cristina for our next move.
"Go find Dixon and then bring her to me" Cristina said.
I scoured the hospital looking for the doctor. I ended in the cardio lab with no luck.
Just then Cristina walked in looking stressed.
"Did you find her?" She asked.
"No I looked everywhere"
"Uhhhh whatever follow me" Cristina said. We walked to the board to find Dr. Dixon waiting there.
"Just wait by the doors while I talk to her" Cristina said. I followed orders and waited just out of ears reach.
All day long I followed both Cristina and Dr. Dixon around. When it was about ten minutes before Cristina had to make her choice she turned around to look at me.
"You and Izzy are the only ones who haven't tried to convince me. Why?" Cristina asked.
"I thought my work spoke for itself. I don't need to convince anyone in the hospital I'm good enough. Not my dad, not Chief Webber and not you. I know I'm good and one day I'll be great. That's all I need" I said before walking away to go wait by the board.
A few minutes later Cristina walked in and went straight to the board.
She scribbled a name down.
"Is she kidding" O'Malley said.
"Congratulations" Meredith said turning towards me.
"Thank you" I said very humbled and confused.
"Congrats Shepherd" Webber said.
"A little secret. You were my first choice" Webber whispered smiling.
I smiled back unsure of what to say. I headed to the scrub room to get ready for the surgery.
I took extra long to scrub in letting my fears and worries wash away. I walked in to see everyone gathered in in the gallery, my dad included.
"You ready?" Webber asked
"Ready. Ten blade" I said.
