Jackson and I had just exited the legal meeting with some lawyers and foundation members when I was paged to the O.R board.
"Dr. Grey is requesting you fix the boards" Wilson said to me as she handed me the iPad.
"Ah okay" I said slightly confused. I looked at the board to see a million surgeries and only a few fully staffed O.Rs.
I sighed taking a seat behind the nurses station trying to juggle the board and the surgeries.
Just as I was finished I heard fighting from the O.R. hallway.
"Can you two shut up? What is going on?" I yelled from the doorway. Alex and Cristina both had patients in their beds ready for surgery stationed in the hallway.
April was hanging out of an already occupied O.R trying to shut them up. Her patient was dying and donating his organs.
"We are both scheduled for O.R 2. That's the problem" Cristina said.
"Give me one second" I begged as I looked over the board's schedule on the iPad, trying to figure it out. I noticed a figure walked up next to me, it was Jackson looking slightly aggravated.
"I'm trying to figure it out just give me a minute" I whispered.
"Kepner go back to your patient and take as much time as you need. Cristina proceed with surgery and Alex you can't wait until one of the other O.R's is ready" Jackson demanded.
"You can't-" Alex began
"That is it!" Jackson sternly said.
He walked away annoyed and Alex huffed as he pushed the patient back to her room.
"Alex"
"What?" He snapped.
"Stop being mad at the world, at us, we didn't do this for us we did it for everyone, including you" I said. He looked at me before pushing his patient's bed.
I walked back to the nurses station with a slight pain in my side.
"Look I know you aren't the head boss or whatever but you are the next thing to the boss and I just wanted to address the protocol in place" Bailey said tapping on the large binder labeled Pegasus protocol.
"Bailey you are going to have to hold that thought" I said
"No I need someone to address it now. I had a hernia repair and wasn't sure whether we are using the stitching method taught to us or we can use our own. Secondly, a kidney was sent unaccompanied because the nurse followed protocol. It can't wait" Bailey kindly said.
"I'll look over it in the next few days"
"Dr. Shepherd I need this looked at now" she said with a slight attitude.
"Dr. Bailey my water just broke" I said. We both looked down to see a pile of water on the floor.
"You're having a baby" she exclaimed.
"I'm having a baby" I said slightly scared and nervous but also excited. "Can someone page Dr. Avery"
I was wheeled to the deliver floor and escorted to a bed. I changed into a hospital gown and out of my scrubs.
I laid alone in the hospital bed in pain for an hour by myself. Nurses barley frequented my room and the doctor hadn't stopped by yet.
"Where is Dr. Avery?" I asked one of the nurses who had just entered the room. Pain coursed through my voice as a contraction waved over me.
"He's in a meeting Dr. Shepherd. I've already paged him four times" she explained.
"I'm pretty sure his child being born takes precedent over a damn board meeting" I said gripping the railing on the bed.
"I'll page him again" she said swiftly leaving the room.
"Tell him it's a code b" I shouted. Jackson and I had planned for a code incase something like this happened.
The doctor walked in and examined me.
"I think it's time" she said.
"No. I need Dr. Avery" I cried.
"I'm here" Jackson called out as he swiftly ran into the room. He threw down the binders and folders in his hand on the couch.
"I'm here" Jackson repeated pushing the hair out of my face.
"Let's begin" the doctor said.
A few pushes later and a healthy baby girl was born.
"Do you have a name?" The nurse asked. I looked at Jackson. We had been debating between a few.
"Gia Harper Avery" Jackson beamed as the nurse handed her to him. We both intensely watch her as she drifted to sleep.
A soft knock came from the door. Meredith and my dad walked in with a bunch of balloons, many of the other doctors behind them popping into see the baby and say hi.
"She's gorgeous. Her name?" Meredith asked.
"Gia Harper Avery"
"How do you feel grandpa" I joked as my dad gave me a hug.
"Ugh I'm too young for that title" he joked.
"I as well" Catherine said as she walked in. The baby was passed around being held by whoever was in the room.
My dad and Meredith had to leave after an hour or so. After all they had their own child, Zola to take care of and they had to be back for the board meeting.
"My baby had a baby" Catherine said smothering Jackson with kisses and hugs.
"Enough mom" Jackson teased.
Catherine, Jackson and I joked for a while with the various doctors that stopped by until the board had to meet again to officially sign off on being members of the board of directors.
The lawyer came to my room for me to sign the papers as I couldn't physically be there.
Once the meeting was done Jackson came back to the room. Gia was sleeping in the bassinet next to my bed.
"How'd it go?" I asked as Jackson climbed into the hospital bed with me.
"You are a proud member of the board of directors at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital" Jackson said. We had discussed renaming the hospital with the foundation as a new fresh start.
"It's a perfect name" I said.
"We are parents" Jackson softly said as we both glanced over at her. She was fast asleep, looking peaceful and angelic.
