Marry Me // D.C.

Darry's POV

She wants to get married, she wants it perfect
She wants her grandaddy preaching the service
Yeah, she wants magnolias out in the country
Not too many people, save her daddy some money

Ooh, she got it all planned out
Yeah, I can see it all right now

She always swore she'd marry before Dean, her granddaddy, died, and I was happy she could keep that promise.

I'll wear my black suit, black tie, hide out in the back
I'll do a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees
Yeah, she wanna get married
But she don't wanna marry me

I just wish it were me up there, talking with her family and smiling as bright as he was.

I remember the night when I almost kissed her
Yeah, I kinda freaked out, we'd been friends for forever
And I always wondered if she felt the same way
When I got the invite, I knew it was too late

All because he had to run up and ruin the moment, scaring both of us as we sat together after the football game, having our usual celebration. Alone. Together.

And I know her daddy's been dreading this day
Oh, but he don't know he ain't the only one giving her away

It was silver and white, two colors she always argued were the best, that paired well. "Like us, Darry! You're silver, and I'm white, we go together well, whether you like it or not!" boy, did I wish she still thought that.

I'll wear my black suit, black tie, hide out in the back
I'll do a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees
Yeah, she wanna get married
But she don't wanna marry me

Her younger siblings all said hello, even her parents. I struggled to hide the flask in my jacket before turning to greet them as well. Her younger sister, always claimed she'd be flower girl at our wedding... Her brother said he'd walk her down the isle, because he figured his dad would be too old by then.

Bet she got on her dress now, welcoming the guests now
I could try to find her, get it off of my chest now
But I ain't gonna mess it up, so I'll wish her the best now

I struggled to loosen the tie before I started to walk to my truck. I couldn't stay for the ceremony. I was afraid I'd do something and ruin her entire night. I couldn't do that to her. Not even I deserved her, and not Paul Holden.

So I'm in my black suit, black tie, hiding out in the back
Doing a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees
Yeah, she wanna get married
Yeah, she gonna get married
But she ain't gonna marry me
Whoa, she ain't gonna marry me, no

I sighed as I sat alone in the same booth we'd hide out in during high school, getting away from home or even to do our homework. I brought the flask back to my lips, hearing pitter patter of feet running around as waitress' rushed about the diner.

"Darry?"

My neck nearly snapped from the sudden movement, looking up to meet her eyes. She looked sad, and there was a bit of mud on the end of her dress, and she was missing her mothers heels, the one she swore she'd wear, as tradition.

"I couldn't do it"
