Sometimes when you retired for the night and you had pleasant dreams, you wished you could never wake up. But that's what they were, dreams and there was a reality what you still had to face.
Slowly, you opened your eyelids as you stared at the ceiling. There was always that thorn of doubt that clouded your mind, always bringing pain. Always making you ask yourself if what ifs. What if you had never, ever tried to learn ninjutsu. Then you wouldn't have trusted Goro and you would have a normal life.
What if you had not left those twelve years? Then perhaps that weight on your shoulders and that loneliness wouldn't sour your life. You would probably settled down, had kids... Absently, your hand trailed to your stomach knowing that perhaps that wouldn't have been an option.
You didn't particularly ever thought of having kids, but when you found out that as long as you healed, it was unlikely that you have kids of your own flesh and blood. If you found a cure or even a treatment...But ykh had none of that.
That's why you made so many mistakes during those twelve years...But you shouldn't regret everything, as much as you hated to admit but because of your abilities you were as to help your friends.
Sighing, you turn your head towards the door only to realize that Gaara had been seating on a chair, next to the bed and holding your hand. You had been so caught up with your thoughts that you hadn't taken notice of his presence.
His green eyes stared at your own, and a warm small smile greeted you. However, when he realized you were going to seat up, he stood up only to push you back on the bed. "You should rest, you need it."
But you didn't need it, after replenishing your chakra, which was most likely acquired from Gaara, you were more than okay. "I'm fine, how are you? How is everyone?"
It ft rather uncomfortable just laying down, so you let go oh his hand and threw your legs over the bed to seat on the edge of the bed. But once you were comfortable, you reached for his hand again. "They're fine, some are a little shaken but all they need is some rest."
Everyone changed so much, they had matured and it weighted heavily on your heart. "I'm glad, but shouldn't you rest too?"
"Naruto was here but since it's rather late be had to leave," but be stayed maybe because he didn't get to see you? "I'll like to thank you for what you did, you helped us all tremendously. If you hadn't arrived, Naruto would have been taken."
"He wasn't the target?" Gaara nodded answering your question.
"And he probably will be until they obtain what they want." This time instead of grasping just one hand, he took ahold of your two hands and tugged you forward just a little bit. "You know you'll always be welcome to the Sand Village. However, since it appears that your chakra has some sort of effect on Momoshiki, I ask you to please remain at Naruto's side."
But he didn't have to ask, if Naruto was indeed in danger you couldn't just leave, specially of you were of help. "Gaara, you don't need to ask me that. I'll stay but I haven't decided what I'll do after Momoshiki is captured or killed. But thank you for welcoming, it warms my heart." Parting his hand, you smile widened. "Anyway, tell me about you. Do you get married? Had any kids?"
Gaara didn't answer right away, although he seemed rather calm you could see the storm of doubts and hesitation in his eyes. "I am not married, but I have a son ,Shinki. I adopted him at a young age."
"I would love to meet him whenever I get the chance." The way you smiled with your lips and with your eyes, it had been so long since he saw that smile. Be missed it completely, and your words brought a warmth to his heart.
He never told you how he felt about you, and he often regretted not ever feeling you. Perhaps it may not be the time right now, but he felt that if he didn't say anything, hell continue to regret it. "Perhaps it is not the time, plenty has taken place and you just recuperated." He paused to release one of your hands only to lean forward and cup your cheek. "I regret never telling you how much you meant to me, which I will do so now." He paused to admire the way your cheeks flushed at the declaration. " Although years had separated us, it has not affected my feelings for you. I had ways had feelings for you, and I thought that they had banished. But seeing you now has proven they haven't changed." As the shock on your face, he leaned even move, now lifting your chin up and closed the distance between the two of you. It was a small kiss, but it was enough to prove his point. He let go of your chin, and hand to stand up. Sending you a smile, he began to leave the room. "You don't have to give me a response now, I'll wait."
And he walked away leaving you blushing, and shocked that Gaara had said and done that. Your mind was a blank slate, free of thoughts. You weren't sure what to say, or to even think.
But who would have thought that outside the room someone had been listening. It had been a young nurse who had heard the whole thing. She gushed with how sweet the Kazekage's declaration that she couldn't keep to herself. Soon the news spread like wildfire.
