Naruto looked tired, not the kind of tired that he has overworked himself. Not that he didn't, but it looked as if he didn't sleep very well last night. The cup of coffee at his side, despite being rather late, said it that he didn't sleep very well at all. Coffee was one of the things that kept him awake, and prevented him from completely stay awake.
You didn't sleep many hours, but it was enough to keep you going besides you still had plenty of hours to get more rest. Naruto's hand reached the cup of coffee just as you were taking a seat. "I would ask if you're okay but it's clear you're not, so what has you so occupied that you can't sleep?"
The blond male drank the whole contents of the cup before giving his attention to you. Shikamaru sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose rather tired as well. "That's why I wanted to talk to you," as if on reflex, Naruto reached for the cup about to take a sip only to find that there was nothing there. Groaning, he slumped back on his seat. "The council, and the Kages have come to a conclusion and that it to have you new housing."
Housing? It was particularly bad, you still lived in the inn and it was much more expensive than renting a place to live. So what was so wrong about that? "They feel that it is necessary to have you close to Naruto at all time, that means 24/7. However, since you require rest just like everyone else, they want you to say at his house. You'll be given a room, next to him. You'll guard him during the day and rest at night, others will guard him at night, but if Momoshiki decides to attack you'll be close to assist and protect Naruto."
"What?" Your gaze shifted back and forward, waiting for either of them to tell you that they were messing with you. But they weren't, which made your face twist in distaste. "Nope, that's not going to happen."
"This is unnecessary, I spoke to all of them and although Gaara agreed the others don't feel the same way." Naruto tried to explain himself, clearly not pleased either.
Shikamaru leaned back on the wall, " it will only be temporary."
"If that's the case that's unneeded!" You rose to your feet as shouted. "I don't mind standing close by if that is the problem but I'm not going to intrude into his house."
"You won't intrude [Name], but I understand you want your privacy that's why I am against it." With the energy changing in the room, Naruto seemed more awake.
All the while Shikamaru observed taken aback by your attitude. The proposition was rather unnecessary but not that strange. He didn't know why you were acting like this. There certainly had to be a reason for your behavior, but even if he asked you wouldn't answer it. "Like I said, only for a few days."
It wasn't a big deal, it shouldn't be a big deal really. Naruto and Hinata were your friends, yes, but Naruto used to harbor feelings for you. But as much as you didn't trust Orochumaru you couldn't stop thinking about his warning. The last you wanted was for you to be that close. "If it's only for a few days then that won't be a problem..." Perhaps it wasn't the best of plans but you had to find an alternative. "I'll keep watch day and night, my body can handle days with no sleep."
"But you need to replenish your chakra, that is what your body needs. If it doesn't have it, how are you supposed to protect Naruto?" Shikamaru counteracted. "Besides the choice has already been made."
So you didn't have anything to say about the matter? You could escape, leave but you couldn't do that to Naruto knowing that he was at risk. Letting out a sigh of frustration, you sat down. "Fine," you turned to Naruto, "but as soon as we arrive to your home I will stay outside until your ready to rest."
The two males exchanged glances surprised and even worried. "What's wrong? It shouldn't be such a big problem [Name]." Naruto seemed rather hurt that you were so unwilling to stay in his home.
"I know, but you work so much Naruto and after you arrive home you need time to be with your family. I know I am welcomed, but I cannot interfere with the time with your family. Okay?" The way Shikamaru was staring at you, it seemed he knew that wasn't true. So, to avoid any more questions, and possibly for Shikamaru to find out you stood up. "If that's all, then ill stay outside. When you're ready to go home, just tell me where I'll be staying so that I'll know." Having that clear, you walked out of the office and waited outside like you told them.
By the end of the day, you were taken to Naruto's home, gave Hinata a small greeting and followed Naruto to where you would be staying. From the decorations of the room, it appeared to be his daughter's room. You just made sure you remembered where it was before you left the house and staid on guard on the room of the house.
The following day you did the same thing, but instead of staying outside of the office you had to say inside. Much like you did when you guarded Gaara.
The same routine happened for a whole week, and it was filled with nothing but the presence of Naruto, Shikamaru, and whomever had to talk to him.
You had to be honest though, during that time you lowered your guard and enjoyed the time you spent with all of your friends. However, Gaara had returned back home along with his son and his people. But not before telling you that after all of this was over, you were welcomed in his home.
But it was strange that Momoshiki had not attacked just yet. A week had passed and there was no sign of him, all of you thought that he would attack a soon as possible but that wasn't the case.
Scratching your head, you glanced down on the street. It was very late already, and with your belly already filled with food that Hinata had given you, you were ready to retire for the night.
You were just standing up and ready to go to what you called your room, when a voice made you stop on your tracks. It sent shivers down your back, not because you were scared, but because you knew why he was here.
Without wasting anytime, you formed a shield that was in the shape of a some that protected Naruto and his home. You formed a shield around your body as well, but your main focus wasn't you.
Perhaps that was your mistake, which was why you had been taken off guard when you felt a kick to your stomach sending you flying off the building. It broke your concentration, but you acted fast as you retrieved a chakra stone and threw it on the roof of the house. The done continued to protect Naruto.
But unfortunately, when you found out that Naruto had not been their main target, it was too soon for you to act. The last thing you saw as a portal swallowed you whole.
