"Katrina," I said, struggling to stand up again. "What is it?" she said, looking up from the baby. "I think I might need you to call Colby. Either I just pissed myself when I've already went to the bathroom, or my water just broke." Her eyes widened and she was frozen for about 5 seconds before snapping out of it. "On it. Don't move," she replied, jumping up with her baby still in her arms. She darted towards the back door and swung it open. "Colby, we need you. Baby, you should get in here too!" Then she darted back over to me, not waiting on an answer. "Come on, let's get you to the car," she said, helping me get up. Colby rushed into the room, with Sam right behind him. "What's wrong? Are you okay?" he said loudly, moving directly in front of me. His eyes scanned me, trying to detect the problem, I guess. "I'm okay," I answered. "But I'm pretty sure that my water just broke." I watched his face freeze, and a million different emotions flit through his eyes. "Colby!" Kat yelled, passing the baby to Sam. "Huh?" he asked absentmindedly, swinging his head in her direction. "Help your wife to your car. Where's the bag? Sam and I will follow you to the hospital." "Oh, uh, it's upstairs at the foot of our bed," he said, taking my arm. "Okay GO! Stop wasting time unless you want her to have this baby on the living room floor." She pushed his shoulder a little and motioned towards the door. Colby walked me quickly to the door, but I could tell that he wasn't entirely present. He was freaking out. Contractions started to hit me on the way to the hospital. It seemed like it took forever because of the polluted traffic. Colby parked the car, then walked around to my side, opened my door, and lifted me from the car. I yelped a little in surprise. "I can walk! What are you doing?" He was literally carrying me inside the hospital, bridal style. "You're too slow. The baby is coming." His voice sounded almost robotic. He was on autopilot, and I almost wanted to laugh. The only thing that stopped me was the contraction that rocked my body, making me bite down on my lip. After the insurance papers and everything was complete, they finally got me into a room. Thankfully a private one because I did not want to push a baby out with others around. I thought that I would have a while, since it took Katrina so long, but that wasn't the case. My contractions started coming faster and stronger, and it felt like they were ripping me apart. I was squeezing Colby's hand so hard, I was surprised that he didn't rip it away from me. He didn't though. He tensed but that was the only evidence I got that it was hurting him. I went from screaming obscenities at him, to apologizing and telling him how much I loved him. Since I was an addict, I couldn't take anything for the pain, and that scared me more than anything. The pain wasn't stopping. It felt like something was trying to rip itself out of my no no square. "It's okay baby, I'm right here. I'm right here," Colby said. "It'll be over before you know it." I glared at him, after the contraction faded. "I'd like to see you try and do this, then tell me that it'll be over before you kno- OW!" I was cut off by another extremely strong contraction. It went like this for about an hour, my contractions getting so strong that I wasn't sure how I was still alive. Finally, the doctor told me that it was time to start pushing. After a lot of screaming in agony, cussing at Colby and the doctor, wanting to give up, and pushing with everything I had left in me, the sound that I heard was the sweetest music that I had ever heard. I was exhausted, sweaty, and my body was done, but that sweet cry made me use my weak arms to reach out to my little girl. Suddenly, another contraction hit me, and I screamed. My body automatically pushed, and the doctor ducked back down between my legs. "Well, how about that..." he mused. "What? Am I okay?" I groaned, feeling like I might pass out by this point. He laughed and held something up. My eyes were blurry from pushing so hard, but it cleared almost immediately when I realized what he was holding. "Wait, what?!" Colby yelled in shock. "Another one? Holy shit..." "Another baby," I whispered, looking at the little boy that I didn't know I was going to have in the doctor's hands. Colby cut the cord on this one too, and the nurse took him to be cleaned up with his sister. "I guess he stayed hidden behind his sister in the sonograms," the doctor said, smiling at me and Colby. We were in absolute shock. "So, congratulations on your twins!" "Twins..." Colby repeated, his face still wearing a dumbfounded expression. I couldn't speak. I watched the babies, my babies, being cleaned up and swaddled, before being brought back over to us. "Would you like to hold them? If you're up to it," one of the nurses asked. There were two standing by my bed, one on my side holding a baby, and one on the other side, passing one of the babies to Colby. I nodded, let her place the baby in my arms. I wasn't even sure if I was holding the boy or the girl. When I looked down into this tiny face, this literal little bundle, this tiny person that Colby and I had created with our love, I knew. I knew that I was meant to do this. As much as I loved Colby, and always believed that I could never love someone more than him, I had been wrong. I would die for this little baby in my arms, and do anything and everything to protect them.
