"Thank you again for dinner Shawn, you really didn't have to pay." I shook my head as I crossed my arms in front of my chest and walked out of the restaurant. We were greeted by the night sky and less paparazzi than before, a few lingering behind in order to take pictures of us that will probably be a headline tomorrow morning.
"You're welcome, it's my pleasure, really." He smiled and I offered him the same gesture, grabbing my car keys from my bag. We walked next to each other awkwardly, not knowing what to say to each other seeing that we basically finished our conversation when we complimented each other. It was as if we had nothing to say. You would think he would forgive me already and we would get on with our lives, but I guess not. He walked me to my car, standing by as I fiddled with my keys, feeling as if we weren't done because we didn't really talk about anything, we made no progress at all.
"I uh, had fun tonight." I cleared my throat and looked up at him, an unsettling look on his face.
"Yeah, me too." He nodded and I did the same, biting my lip and unlocking my door. "I'm sorry Nicole." He began and I turned to look at him with a confused look on my face.
"Sorry for what?" I chuckled.
"I know dinner was a dud, trust me I didn't mean for it to be, I just got caught up in my head I guess." He shrugged.
"It's fine Shawn, I mean we talked yesterday so it makes sense." I lightly shoved his arm in a playful manner and he flashed me a small smile, a sad look still on his face. I sighed, feeling bad that he felt as if it was his fault. I mean, I didn't try either. I just don't know what to say! It's weird, I feel weird because it feels so normal, hanging out with him again and talking. It's like deja vu.
"Do you maybe want to go for a walk? Get some coffee around the corner?" I offered and his face changed.
"Yeah, I'd like that." He beamed and I locked my car, Shawn allowing me to walk in front of him. We walked next to each other, heading towards a small cafe that was not too far from Port. We remained quiet, still not knowing what to say to each other. I crossed my arms once again, feeling a cold chill go up my body and realizing I should've worn something warmer.
"Here." Shawn said and I gave him a puzzled look as he began to take of his jacket, revealing the long sleeve button down he had on.
"No it's fine! Really!" I refused his offer and he still managed to put the jacket on me.
"It's cold, and I know you get sick easy." He snickered and I blushed at how he remembered how sick I get.
"I know it's cold, that's why you should keep it." I fought back and he shook his head, stuffing his hands in his pocket. "Thank you, really."
"It's no problem." He grinned. "Its weird, isn't it?" He asked me and I looked at him, knowing exactly what he was talking about.
"What's weird?" I played dumb and he chuckled.
"You Nicole, are good at many things, but lying isn't one of them." He responded and I snickered, knowing he was right. "This, us talking and going out, it's weird. You can admit it."
"Well, I won't say that it isn't." I shrugged, "But we talked about this, it's so we can talk things out you know, as friends in order to make amends."
"So I could get to know the real you, not the you from three years ago." He pointed out and I nodded, agreeing to his words. We finally made it to the coffee shop and ordered two coffees to go before heading back outside and deciding to sit out on a dock, our feet hanging above the water as we stared out onto the boats that were floating.
