41 - Talk with the Chairman

In the Chairman's office, Don Jose is delighted how the works he left behind for his trip were completed. He is more convince now how effective Gabriel and Emily's working tandem.

"Impressive, all works are done. Now I will have more time to study our new business venture. Ang galing ng tandem nyo ni Gabriel at work," Don Jose commented.

"Thank you, Mr. Chairman," Emily replied.

"Kahit sa DBS ka magtatrabaho, I still want you to review some documents for me," Don Jose uttered.

"Noted, Mr. Chairman," Emily said. "Pwede po bang magtanong, Sir?" she then asked after a while.

"Go ahead, what do you want to know?" Don Jose asked.

"Bakit po kayo pumayag na magpalit kami ni Norma?" Emily asked.

"Hija, narinig mo naman ang sinabi ni Gabriel, di ba? Only you can tame, Elizabeth," Don Jose said.

"And I am certain that you know the reason why," Emily straightly said. "Please tell me the truth, Sir. Was my grandfather the reason why you hired me?" she asked.

Don Jose releases a hugh sigh as he was not expecting Emily to confront him this early. He is expecting this kind of scenario but not this immediate. He wonders what is on the mind of this smart lady in front of him.

"When I decided to hire you, I did not know yet that you are Lino's granddaughter. Though I admit that Emmanuel came into my mind first when I saw you. You look exactly like your father, hija. So, while you were preparing your requirements for employment, I grab that chance to investigate about you. That was the time I learned about your connection to my best friend Lino," Don Jose said.

"Is that the reason why I have this kind of priviledges that the other employee does not have?" Emily said.

"You are correct, at first. But when I saw how diligently you work and how you make things easy for me, naisip ko na tama lang na ibigay ko sa iyo ang mga priviledges that you have now," Don Jose said. "For me you deserve more than that, with the intelligence that you have, mas tama sa iyo na magpatakbo ng negosyo kesa maging ordinaryong empleyado" he added.

"I knew it, may kinalaman talaga ang Lolo sa mga nangyayaring ito. This is all about my grandfather's doing," Emily said.

"I choose you to be my executive assistant because I know you are fit for the job. Your Lolo has nothing to do with your employment at JACP," Don Jose said.

"Then why are you saying I am more fit to manage a business than being an ordinary employee? Don Lino once told me, hindi ako bagay na maging ordinaryong empleyado lang mas papakinabangan daw ako kung magpapatakbo ako ng negosyo," Emily asked.

"Hija, please don't think that your grandfather influenced me that was why I hired you. You got the job because you are the most qualified," Don Jose said.

"At least we are clear on that area," Emily said. "But if you tell me that Don Lino has nothing to do with Gabriel's training Elizabeth, I will not believe you," she added.

"Yes, Elizabeth's training and Gabriel, as her trainor is your grandfather's idea. I did not see anything wrong about it. Kaya pumayag ako since pumayag din naman si Elizabeth," Don Jose said.

"If this is Don Lino's idea, siguradong he is rooting for Elizabeth and Gabriel. Please, Mr. Chairman, tell him to spare my sister. Wag nyang panghimasukan ang kaligayahan ng kapatid ko. Hayaan nya si Elizabeth na pumili ng tamang lalaki para sa kanya," Emily said.

"I'm offended, we are talking about your sister and Gabriel, my grandson. Do you think Gabriel is not a good catch?" Don Jose asked.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Chairman, I mean no offense. What I'm saying is, hayaan na lang po ninyo na pumili si Gabriel at Elizabeth ng mga taong gusto nila at siguradong makapagpapasaya sa kanila," Emily said.

"That's what I told Lino. Don't worry, hindi naman ako papayag na magkatuluyan si Elizabeth at si Gabriel kung hindi nila gusto ang isa't-isa. And base sa mga kwento ni Gabriel, I doubt kung may romantic relationship na mabubuo sa kanilang dalawa," Don Jose said. "Besides, Gabriel already told me that he already got his eyes on a special lady," he added.

Emily was not able to speak after that last statement of Don Jose. Again, she felt that pinch on her  chest and this time it is more painful than the previous. The fact that Gabriel told his grandfather about his special lady only means that he is serious about that girl.

"Forgive me for asking, but I want to know bakit ayaw mong bumalik sa Lolo mo?" Don Jose then asked.

"I value my freedom, Mr. Chairman. When my sister and I live with my grandfather, he starting controlling our lives.  He always has the last say. My mother did not raise us na parang mga robot. She let us decide for ourselves, with her guidance," Emily said.

"You and Elizabeth are living proof that Arlene raised you well," Don Jose said. "Alam mo ganyan talaga yang Lolo mo noon pa. Palibhasa, bata pa sinabak na ng father nya na pamahalaan ang negosyo nila kaya oftentimes authoritative sya," Don Jose said.

"But not to the point of forcing me to marry someone I don't like," Emily said.

"I understand, hija," Don Jose said.

"I'm sorry that I had to ask you about this. I'll be more comfortable if you know what I truly feel on this set-up," Emily said.

"And appreciate it, hija. Thank you for your honesty," Don Jose said.

"Sir, please know that the triplets do not know my affiliation with Elizabeth. Mas mabuti po siguro na hindi na lang nila malaman. I will be more at ease if they look at me as your executive assistant rather than the stowaway granddaughter of your best friend," Emily said.

"If that's what you want, I will not tell anyone," Don Jose said.

"Thank you, Mr. Chairman," Emily said.

"You're welcome, hija. Is there anything else?" Don Jose asked 

"That's all, Mr. Chairman," Emily said, smiling with gratefulness. 

 "You may go back to work now," Don Jose said, and Emily immediately goes back to her desk and continued working.

She busied herself preparing her work stuff as she only has very little time to do it as she will be reporting to DBS office starting on Monday.

Despite her confusion on Gabriel's request she just let the Chairman decide as she thought that it would also be good for Elizabeth as her sister will be more relax with her presence. It will do good not only for Elizabeth but for Gabriel as well because she knows how hard it is to deal with her sister once she decided to be stubborn.
