Track #15: Because I Had You

Shawn's POV

February 11, 2018

The sun is in full splendor and the air stirs the soft beach sand that sticks to my damp skin after a brief dip. I can truly call this paradise. I would bring my mother here for a vacation sometime, she would love it. I adjust my sunglasses on top of my head to get a better look at the guys farther away from me, and laugh when Nate catches Drew from behind by pushing him back into the water. The poor man spits out salt water as he manages to sit on the shore, with the calm waves lapping at his feet. What a beautiful Friday...

It is our second day here in Jamaica and we have had a wonderful time. I got up very early so as not to miss a single second of this trip that may not be repeated for a long time. We have judiciously set to work as promised to Drew, and this is our reward: three hours of total peace before heading back to the studio.

Scott and Geoff are chasing each other with a nearly deflated ball, while Teddy is collecting rocks and sea shells from the ground to take home. What she doesn't know is that this is forbidden. Nate is still conning Drew into sinking him into the sea and Ziggy swims alongside them. Josiah has stayed behind taking a few pictures of us. He's been joining us since October of the previous year to record moments of the process of creating this album. And me... I'm swinging on the water enjoying this little break.

Yesterday we spent some time looking around the studio, setting up the instruments we could work with and in no time we had already composed a new song thanks to the good mood in the room. Lost In Japan is sure to be a hit.

After taking a shower and lunch on the veranda, Scott and I sit on the large terrace with a breathtaking view. Josiah stands on the sidelines quietly recording the session, while the others assist Teddy in producing what we recorded yesterday. We are all super focused.

With the drafts Ian sent us this morning to my email open on my laptop and mine in my notebook, I explain to Scott what I'm looking for with the next song.

- It would be fun to say the opposite of what I felt at that moment. You know, like... - I pause and search for the right words. - Hey, I need to know if this thing between the two of us is mutual, before I get too involved in this situation. You know what I mean? As a warning to stay away from her, even though we both know I've already exceeded that limit.

At this point there is no need to clarify who I am talking about. I've avoided mentioning her name since the last time I spoke to her, and that was a few days ago before I came here. At least now she deigns to reply to my messages, but nothing has improved between us.

- So as not to involve you even more if possible. - Scott follows the idea laughing at me.

- Exactly. - I nod blushing with embarrassment. - It should be simple. I wrote a couple of lines while reflecting on what happened. - I mumble turning the scribbled pages of my notebook looking for a specific lyric. - Here it is. ''I told you that I really loved you, but you did not reciprocate those feelings''. I'd like to use this in this song.
