By the end of the night, we had reached Arbor Hills. Most of the trip there went without incident. Things were still tense, as I suspected it would always be with Negan around, but there wasn't half as much fighting as there was in the days before.
It was only this morning that we got out of that tunnel system. I still hadn't eaten, though it was easier to deal with when I was focused on other things. Now that we were walking in silence, I could feel the burning pain of hunger with every step. I'd eat when we found the food we came for.
I walked along Shane's side as we reached the neighborhood Maggie told us about. Since Maggie and I chatted on the train, it seemed to change things. She wasn't so quick to decide things for herself anymore. It looked like she was actually planning on keeping it up, too.
"Well, this place sure has gone to shit since the last time I was here," Negan said, staring ahead as we turned onto the main road into the community. I was shocked ---and rather put off--- by the sight of bodies hanging from the trees along the path. They were hung by their feet, upside down as they lined the path. "Let's double back. We can cut through-"
He was cut off right then. I could feel a collective stiffness over all of us when an arrow flew through the air, right into Gage's chest. He stood there for a moment, almost as if he didn't realize what had happened. There was a moment of all of us frozen in our places before a second arrow hit Roy in his bad eye. Both of them fell to the ground, dead before we could even process what had happened.
I was still in shock when Cole screamed out in pain nearby. I barely got to see what happened in the darkness and amongst the absolute shit-show unfolding around me, but I could see a slice in his pants, blooding leaking out of his leg. I could see shadows moving in the distance, far down the road, but I suspected they were all around us.
I grabbed my dagger with white knuckles as things got worse. I heard screaming from all directions, people running and scattering. I tried to spot Shane through the dark but with the hustling and the addition of at least ten strangers, presumably Reapers, I lost track of him fast.
Rushing back toward the woods, in search of any kind of cover, I tripped and stumbled over a body at my feet. I hardly looked back, just enough to assure it was Gage's and not someone else. I was livid at that, admittedly for selfish reasons, but I was livid nonetheless. People were dying.
As I rushed into the woods, I held my dagger up, ready to go and fight. I kept my eye out for my own people, checking to see who was hurt and who was alive. Though I knew it was coming, the last thing I wanted was for all of us to split up and not know who was missing and who was dead. I wasn't leaving anyone behind.
My eyes scanned through the black, looking for any sort of assurance that people were okay. So far, it was only Roy and Gage that we had lost, and while that wasn't ideal, it was better than us losing everyone. I was primarily worried about Shane, though, because I knew he had a tendency to go after the bad guy himself. So did I, if I was being honest. I had a bad feeling this situation wouldn't be that different.
My breath hitched in my throat as I caught sight of a figure, masked and in all black, grabbing hold of Cole by the shoulder. A knife went to his throat and cut it wide open, leaving him to splat to the ground, dead. Behind me, a knife flew through the air and hit Alden. Not far from him, Duncan took multiple hits to his arms and abdomen. He was a big guy, but it didn't look good for him.
I kept running, afraid of what would happen if I slowed down now. I had completely lost sight of Shane now, and Daryl wasn't anywhere near, either. I stopped for a moment and changed directions when one of the Reapers sliced at Gabe's face, cutting a gash on his cheek.
