Coma part 2

In truth, you were a bit scared he'd never wake up. Usually people in comas from near death experiences don't wake up. But by some miracle, he did.

At first he wasn't fully lucid, which was expected given it'd been months since he went under. Even someone as smart as him would take a hit to the brain after a heart attack that bad. But even in that blurry state he woke up in... there was recognition in his eyes when he saw you. He was blurry on what happened that day, but he remembered you.

As glad as you were, and as badly as you wanted to just sit and talk with him for hours about... everything. You knew you had to give him room to recover and hand things over to his real next of kin. The man who showed up turned out to be named Roger, and was a family friend and co worker of Watari's. You still didn't know much about L outside what you'd learnt from interacting with him on the case. His childhood and family was still a big mystery to you. But from his near death experience, you did learn your hunch about Watari being his dad was right, although it was via adoption. Which of course, didn't make the relationship any less of a real family. But you did wonder what happened with L's birth parents. Did they give him up at birth? Was he put into foster care by the British equivalent of CPS? Did they die? You had no idea, but you weren't about to bring that up at a time like this. L had offhandedly mentioned he grew up in Winchester, and that he was only half Japanese. So maybe it was a situation where one parent hooked up with the other while on a work trip to another country and ended up pregnant and putting the kid up for adoption because she couldn't care for it as a single parent? You wanted the details, but now really wasn't the time.

You'd also figured out that there was definitely some kind of... network? If that was the word, going on behind the scenes. L was the detective, Watari his dad and bodyguard basically, Roger seemed to be doing a lot of behind the scenes paperwork type stuff... and you briefly overheard something about a successor? Or maybe two of them? You knew L, the title, was likely a whole ass operation. But you had no idea how deep it went.

L, the person however? He seemed... a bit different since waking up. Which could just be the delicate health and grief of his father's loss he was currently experiencing, but something was definitely different. He seemed... softer? Less analytical and more emotional. You'd never seen him like this before, it wasn't bad, just new. Perhaps there was some introspection happening too, coming so close to death is bound to make a person really think about their life after all. His heart was delicate now, that heart attack didn't kill him but it did some serious damage. He'd likely be chronically ill the rest of his life now. Maybe he was processing that..?

Regardless, you still showed up. Still visited him as long as he was in hospital and when he was finally discharged, back at the taskforce HQ he now had to figure out what to do with now the case was over. Maybe sell it to a developer? Keep it for the next case he did in Japan? Either way, he'd be going back to England eventually. For now, it was just him and Roger in that massive building. And you, whenever you had the chance. You'd talk about how he was recovering, the details of the case, cake recipes and bubble tea flavours.

Deep down, you knew it was a matter of time before he finally asked you. But you weren't sure how he'd approach it, given his tendency to keep people at arms length for his safety. But it was just the two of you at the table with some crepes you'd bought over one afternoon when he finally said it.

"Why did you stay?" He muttered, sounding almost... guilty in a way.

"...because I didn't know if you had anyone else. And I wasn't just going to leave you if you didn't" you replied.

He was silent for a moment, thinking about your reasoning. Pensive look on his face and slightly tense body language.

"You didn't have to. You don't even know my real na-"
