Continuation of last chapter
Connor had been in and out of surgery all day, having not seen Ava. It was late afternoon and Connor had just scrubbed out of his third surgery. He pulled out his phone and sent Ava a quick message
To: Avery
Hey Ave, was wondering if your free to grab a quick bite, I'm not due in surgery for another three hours
Connor came of out CT, putting his phone in his pocket he headed down to the Ed.
When the elevator doors pinged open Connor was met with a frenzy of people.
"What's going on?!" Connor called to Maggie, having not gotten any messages over his pager.
"This guy came in trying to score some meds, went off at some staff and ran off" Maggie said while bandaging a women's head.
"Where's Ava?"
"Haven't seen her since it happened"
Connor ran around the ed in a panic looking for Ava but instead running into Natalie and Jay.
"Nat have you seen Ava" he questioned, ignoring Jay.
"No not since the attack, she was headed down to pathology, wanted some answers as to why a patient of hers had died"
Connor sighed a breath of relief, Ava was fine.
"Don't celebrate yet. We're monitoring all the elevators, their only for emergency patient use. There's still an attacker on the loose in the house"
Connor headed to the stairwell, wanting to talk to Jay about what had happened this morning.
"Jay what's going on between you and Ava" Connor asked, his hand on the door.
"Look man I'm not the one to tell you anything, it's about Ava. She's safe and she'll talk soon okey. That's all you need to know" Jay threw his hands up in the air.
Just then the fire alarm rang, Maggie shut it off at the computer, knowing it must have been a false alarm.
"It's says fire exit 3 was opened, two minutes ago"
" Pathology" Connor breathed, making eye contact with Jay.
The pair rushed down the stairs to the basement, the fire escape was swinging open. Connor and Jay ran into the tarmac after the attacker. Two PD cars pulled up from around the corner, "Chicago PD, put your hands in the air. Connor watched from the doorway as he saw the perp get cuffed and put into the back of the car. Shaking his head he turned back into the hospital, heading to the pathologist floor to try grab Ava.
He was just about to round the staircase when he heard shallow breathing. A pale arm reached across the floor of the steps below him. Pulling herself with one arm Ava pulled herself up two steps on her stomach.
'Ava!" Connor shouted running down to her. Lifting her head weakly, her curls falling out of her face Ava looked up at him. Rolling onto her side she winced and smiled at him. "Getting Déjà vu, really have to stop bleeding out in stairwell" Ava laughed weakly.
Following her occupied hand Connor saw a deep gash in her leg, "He nicked the artery"
Ava's uniform was already covered in blood and dirt from the floor, Ava's fingers pinching her artery were the only thing keeping her alive. Scoping her up in his arms he rushed into pathology. "I need a gurney!"
"We don't normally deal with the living on this floor" a nursed said pulling a free gurney over.
Connor got Ava onto the bed and pulled her into the elevators. Before the doors could close Jay hopped in. "What can I do" Jay panicked seeing all the blood. Yeah, he was used to seeing blood, but it was never his job to keep someone alive.
Connor pulled Ava's hand away from her leg gently. "Pinch here" he said pushing Jays fingers into Ava's thigh.
"Avery, come on stay with me now, one more floor to go" Connor tried to sooth her the best he could, pushing her hair from her forehead with shakey hands.
"Ava" Maggie shrieked as she was pulled into the Ed.
"Female 32, attacked with an unknown object, nicked artery in the left leg, in and out of consciousness"
"Let's get an IV started an a round of 0-" Connor called as he began cutting away Ava scrubs.
Connor began working on Ava's leg as she hand an oxygen mask fitted.
"Come on Ava, you can pull through this"
"Theirs something in there" one of the nurses pointed out, handing Connor a set of tweezers.
Connor carefully slid the foreign object out of Ava's leg. "End of a scalpel blade"
