An Annoying Start

Ace Valenti woke up when something heavy thudded onto his chest. He shot up and coughed, his hands wrapping around and grabbing the metal helmet before it could fall into his lap.

"Time for duty." A deep voice laughed from beside him.

The boy groaned and ran his hand down his face, reaching over and grabbing glasses from under his bed, putting them on his face.

"You guys are assholes." Ace said, throwing his helmet back at the two boys standing over him. Cato caught it with ease with a mischievous smirk on his face.

"What happened to you waking up with the sun?" Max asked, his hands gripping the rails of the top bunk, he looked like he was ready to swing.

Ace swung the blankets off of him and put his feet on the ground between his friends. He looked out the window to see the sun starting to gleam over the horizon. He looked back at Max.

"I still do, I've learned to fall right back asleep." he said, running a hand through his hair, "But I don't call this 'with the sun.' I don't need to be up for another half-hour."

"You gotta eat breakfast dude. Most important meal of the day." Cato said, enjoying this far too much.

He sighed and stood up. The sounds of the others in Cohort Two still soundly sleeping under their comfy blankets. Ace peered over to the top bunk where Skyler looked like she was in a coma rather than a comfy rest. Her pale blonde hair covered her face to the point no one could see her features.

"So did you guys wake up just to rub this whole thing in, or do you actually have a reason to be up?" Ace asked as he made his way over to the sink to brush his teeth.

"As much as I enjoy your torment." Cato said as he strapped his sheath with his gladius, "I have to get training early today because Reyna asked for me later."

Ace nodded at him through the mirror, before leaning over and spitting into the sink.

"And since you're stuck on duty, I'm stuck doing the training." Max said as he finished making his bed. Ace knew he was complaining to fit in, Max loved training almost as much as Cato did.
