Chapter 20.
The Opening Act
ACE LEARNED QUICKLY that time was a hard thing to judge in Alaska. There wasn't really any sun since they were so far north, and that was his main way to take note of the time of day. The whole thing was disorienting.
Not to mention the clouded sky meant he wasn't getting nearly as much sun as his body was used to.
He truly had no idea how much time had passed when Percy brought him a hot chocolate, when Hazel explained some of the bigger landmarks they were passing, or when they hit their first real Alaskan monster problem.
The tourists saw them as Eagles. Ace saw them for what they really were. Gryphons. Big flying creatures with the body of a panther and the head of a bald eagle. The four of them crowded around the window to get a better look. They were circling up, ready to dive down on their prey.
Ace was more than willing to bet that the four demigods on the train were the prey.
All at once, the emergency brake slammed on, cashing him and the rest of the passengers to the floor. He had seemed to go farther than the rest, landing next to a family who was significantly more confused than himself.
The Gryphons screeched and took their chance, diving down and shattering the window. Instinct took over Ace. He rolled to the young children of the family and covered them with his body as the glass from the window went flying.
Luckily Ace was wearing layers, so the glass did nothing but nick his neck and the back of his right hand. He couldn't see what happened next, but the world seemed to turn upside down. He kept the kids in his arms and as they fell, the kids screamed. His back hit against something hard, knocking the wind out of him.
Once his vision cleared he figured out why. The train had been turned completely on its side.
Ace handed the siblings quickly back to their parents who were too far away in shock to even listen and elicit a thank you.
His eyes narrowed as he scanned the area, looking for his friends. They weren't hard to find considering the Gryphons were surrounding them. He had looked just in time to see Frank fire an arrow that split the neck of the Gryphon that was holding Percy.
