Chapter 7.

The Continental Midwest

EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO SUN SHINING into Ace's cabin, his internal clock woke him up. He tried to go back to sleep but this was his first new bed since he was a small child. He was restless and his chest was tight with anxiety. He knew as soon as his eyes opened that he wasn't getting back to sleep.

He was more surprised than he thought he'd be when the main thing on his mind was Arya. Her screams still echoed in his ears, Percy's comments about the war, about torture. On top of that he was still worried about Cato and Cyrus, and his role within this unlikely group of demigods.

Ace groaned, ran his hand down his face, and swung his feet off his bed.

Even with the shower, Ace expected to be the first one up. To his surprise Leo was sitting in the mess hall, looking over blueprints of the ship. No doubt looking at what to fix.

"Is anyone sitting here?" Ace asked, gesturing across

He looked like a deer in the headlights as Leo met Ace's eyes, then shook it off. "Be my guest."

Ace ordered an egg and cheese bagel as he cracked open his book,

"How long have you been up?" Ace asked.

Leo looked down at his watch, which he didn't have, then squinted his eyes, "I'm not sure. I sleep enough to keep me rested." He looked around, learned in and lowered his voice, "plus the whole Arya thing kinda shook me up. I didn't sleep much after that."

Ace nodded. He had to bite into his food to stop himself from asking more. Instead he settled on the broad one.

"Is she okay?"

Leo shrugged, "No one really knows. She was up on the deck sparring when I woke up. Letting out all the internal rage and stuff. Just don't bring it up if you like your head attached to your shoulders."

That meant she was up well before dawn. Who knows if she went back to sleep at all.

Ace finished his sandwich and let the whole thing go. Choosing to let his eyes focus on the schematics of the giant vessel they were on. Leo had circled the areas that needed fixed and was making notes in the sloppy handwriting that engineers so often had.

For a moment Ace wished he was back home. New Rome University offered a class called History through Blueprints class that he planned on taking his first year. The professor told Ace he was going to save a spot. Ace guessed looking at the ones Leo's put together would have to tie him over.
