Brain vs. Brawn
HE KEPT WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO GO HORRIBLY WRONG.
They had been on the water for nearly twenty-four hours at this point and other than one sea-whip that tried to break a hole onto the ship that Arya stopped in record time, nothing had gone amiss.
After a brutal training session the night before he had slept past the sun for the first time in forever. When he did get up and eat it was time for his watch, he was nearly late. Jason told him he had tried to knock on his cabin door to wake him up, but Ace hadn't been in his cabin.
Hazel and him spent a long time talking during their time together, about Hacate and her childhood, trying to connect the dots about her mom practicing real magic. Ace let her talk things out while he listened with an open ear.
After that Leo pulled him into the engine room in an attempt to upgrade the magic systems that the ship used to fly, as well as the ballistas.
In that same time Leo revealed he had made a few new types of arrows for him. The first being a sonic arrow that when embedded lets out a frequency that only monsters can hear, debilitating them for a few seconds. The second was a straightforward explosion arrow.
He ran five of each down into his quiver.
Then Ace did something he hadn't really had the time to do since their journey began. He brought his notebook up onto the deck, along with his glasses and decided to write. Some of the others seemed to have the same idea. Leo was at the helm like always, but tinkering rather than frantically trying to build and fix. Nico, Frank, and Jason were trying to learn a card came from Piper and it was clear that neither Nico nor Jason were understanding very quickly. On the other side of the boat Arya was sitting with Hazel, giving the younger girl her first lesson in the mist.
Things almost felt right... Almost.
At least for once it didn't feel like every possible thing could be going wrong. His heart yearned to call his friends and tell them everything that had happened. Cato would be able to offer advice that Ace so desperately needed from his brother. Max would keep him talking for hours with questions, and Skylar would be his hype person.
He couldn't though. It had been made clear the last time that they ran into each other that Ace was an official traitor and death would be waiting for him if he ever set foot back into Camp Jupiter. He would have to apply to an actual college, which would be hard without any money, a real high school diploma, and or references.
