Chapter Seventeen: High End Air B&B
IT WAS HARD TO TELL HOW MUCH TIME HAD PASSED when running as fast as the speed of sound. Frank threw up twice. Percy had fallen to his knees. Ace's hands were cramping up from holding on so hard. The Horse took them over the water, zipping past city after city. Frank informed the boys at one point that they had crossed over the Canadian border. Then, Arion followed a highway for miles upon miles.
They would have kept going without complaint but the wheels started smoking. Hazel forced Arion to slow down at the base of a hill and the boys fell onto the dewy grass when the chariot basically disintegrated out from under them.
The three of them were a mess. Speed travel didn't wear well on any of them. Ace's vision was still blurry, having gotten used to looking at things from a supersonic perspective, and his legs felt like they didn't work right. He hastily dug around in his backpack and put his glasses on, hoping that would help calm his eyes which felt like they were of the googly variety.
"That was fun!" Hazel said. Ace could practically hear the smile in her voice.
"Says the one who got to ride the horse how he was meant to be ridden." Ace responded, then coughed the excess air out of his lungs.
"Well I think it's fair. I was sick as a dog on the boat, I call it karma." Hazel teased back.
Ace stood up taller, his body starting to feel like a normal human again and chuckled at her comment. He was glad to see that Hazel was getting more comfortable around him. He didn't realize how much questing bonds a group of people.
The group savaged all the supplies they could as Frank came to the realization that they were near his grandmother's house in Vancouver, Canada. Hazel had no problem asking him if she would let them spend the night. Get some food and a decent bed. The crew had gone over two days without a solid meal or some rest.
Frank was more than happy to oblige, and the rest of them followed him over the hill and to grandma's house.
When they reached the peak of the mountain, Ace could sense that something was off. It wasn't until they reached the base of the hill that he realized what it was. Too scared to speak, Ace pulled Hazel back. She signaled for Ella to fall back and the three of them hid behind a log.
