"My mother used to tell me that when push comes to shove, you always know who to turn to. That being a family isn't a social construct but an instinct."
Chapter 12.
Phone Calls and Prep Time
"I DON'T WANT HIM TO DIE."
"I've known you practically my whole life. I'm not the one that you need to convince."
After the absolute shit-show conversation this morning, Ace followed Jason out of breakfast in an attempt to console. Ace could see both sides of the argument without a doubt, he liked Nico but the kid had lied to all of them. Even the ones that seemed to know Nico well.
It had been a few hours since the three left for Atlanta. Jason and Ace had moved on from the breakfast conversation more than once. The guilt about the whole thing went down was not leaving Jason though and every time there was a long enough silence the topic was brought back up.
"I feel awful. I usually have no problem listening to her, and I don't like challenging her. " Jason wasn't talking about Hazel, "Nico means a lot to her and I'm worried that's blinding her."
Jason had been missing from Ace's life for well over six months. He had been living as a greek in camp-half blood for most of it. Ace wouldn't ever learn everything that his friend had experienced and he was having to put a lot together based on context alone.
Arya meant a great deal to Jason. Ace would hope the opposite of that held true as well. He didn't know why, or what caused those two to build such a bond but they had. Jason clearly looked up to Arya in a way Ace had only ever seen him do with Cato. Her opinion meant the world to him.
"Are the two of them that close?" It wasn't a good question but Ace wanted to fill the silence.
Jason let out a small shrug, "Like Percy said earlier. It's complicated. To make a very long story short Arya took Nico in as a brother two and a half years ago when his sister died. Nico struggled with that. I guess still struggles with it and will push her away."
Two and a half years ago. According to what Ace had learned from Percy that would have put them right at the beginning of the war. He wondered if Nico's sister had been a casualty.
"There are nine of us on this ship Jason. I'm sure one of us will come up with a plan that lets us go after Nico and close the doors."
Jason didn't believe in the impossible task, Ace didn't either.
