Packing for a Quest
THE REST OF THE SENATE MEETING COVERED THE UPCOMING BATTLE. Cyrus promised his forces would be training for the next five days to prepare. A tentative battle plan was made. Then they broke for lunch.
Ace wanted to run out before people approached him. He could feel the lingering stares throughout the meeting and it took everything in him to keep his composure. Although as soon as he stood up, he saw Cyrus with a smile on his face making his way over to his son.
"There's my boy!" He called, "It's about damn time."
Ace could talk to his dad about a lot of things, Cyrus was a great confidant. Except now, he looked so excited, and Ace couldn't tell him how terrified he actually was. His dad wouldn't understand because Ace was raised to be anything but.
"Isn't it great dad?" Cato said, walking next to Ace.
Cyrus put his hand on Ace's shoulder, and even though he thought be was acting normal. Cyrus' expression showed him he saw right through it.
"Listen son. I knew from the moment I took you in you were destined for great things. I'm proud to see you coming into your own."
"I just agreed to go on a quest." Ace shrugged, "It wasn't anything fantastic."
"He's not just talking about the quest." Cato said, "Ace, you stood up today and commanded the Senate with assertiveness no one has ever seen you."
Ace thought back. He had stood up and talked far more than ever, he had been surprised by his own confidence. It didn't occur to him that others had noticed as well.
"I need to get going. The reserve forces are getting lunch to plan." Cyrus said, he took a step forward and put his hand on the back of Ace's neck, the other on his shoulder. "Good luck. May the gods be with you as long as they are able. And my boy... Plese, come back to me."
Ace felt the tears start to sting in his eyes at the words. It happened every time Cyrus talked to him like that. He owed his dad everything, and it was times like this where any thoughts Ace had about being a burden to him were forgotten.
