A MIXING OF BLOOD

Ace absolutely hated Percy's plan. And if the kid wasn't so damn confident, there was no way Pluto Ace would let him go through with it. Ace was a nervous wreck and there was nothing that he could do about it but stand back and watch. Percy was determined that it had to be him and wouldn't let any of his new friends argue.

With some convincing. Hazel led Ella out of the nest and down through the library back into the drizzling rain. Dreary weather, for an incredibly dreary day. They walked with determination through the streets although Ace felt like he would be physically sick. This could go so horribly wrong and they could do nothing about it.

Phineas was where they left him, on the bench at the table eating his food like the greedy old man that he was. Seeing him again started to raise Ace's body temperature. It got bad enough that Frank had to step away from Ace. He felt like he was going to explode.

Percy explained how things were going to work. Both identical vials would be placed in front of them. One would heal anyone of all ailments, and the other would guarantee an automatic death. No one knew which was which. If Phineas won he would get everything, including his vision, but excluding the Harpy. If Percy won, Phineas will have to give him the location of the glacier with Alcyoneus, through a piece of paper.

The rest of them all had to swear on the River Styx not to intervene.

The entire bet was placed on the fact that Gaea cared more that Percy lived compared to Phineas. A risky gamble considering Gaea seemed to want to do things on her own terms. Ace didn't like the odds at all. His weight was shifting back and forth between his feet. He was sure if his hands were clenched behind my back that they would be shaking.

They watched with great intent as Percy and Phineas both examined and weighed the bottle. Ace was a nervous wreck and it was taking everything in him not to run forward and put a stop to the whole thing. But he had made a promise in the River Styx, and while he had never made one before, kids in the Legion were lectured endlessly about the seriousness of making such promises. It was scary enough to deter Ace from ever making one up until this point.

There was no sign from Gaea until the very last second. Right when Phineas was about to make his decision, an earthquake, light enough that it was hardly felt on Ace's feet. He shared a look with Frank and Hazel when Phineas picked his bottle. None of them were sure which side Gaea chose to be on.
