Chapter 47: The Letter

Max's pov

Billy kept laughing because I couldn't get the letter he was holding. "it's not funny Billy, the letter is for me" I said annoyed.

"Billy stop it please" my mom said. Billy's smile faded and looked at my mom. "or what?" he asked. My mom didn't say anything.

He opened the letter. I tried to grab it again but failed once again. "Hi maxie-" he started reading out loud but then laughed. "who the fuck calls you maxie?" he mocked laughing

"Shut up Billy, it's my best friend" I said. I didn't know who wrote the letter since he didn't let me get it but I could tell it was from el

Because she's the only one who calls me that. "That's the stupiest nickname ever" he said laughing. As he was about to start reading again, my mom unexpectedly grabbed it from him

He looked at her surprised at how she did that because he wasn't paying much attention. "That's personal stuff you have no right to read it" my mom said angrily.

My mom sometimes talks back when she's mad but we're both terrified afraid of the consequences. "Alright chill, I was just joking around. Don't be so dramatic" Billy said rolling his eyes.

Neil was at his own world, eating. He was clearly drunk so he didn't care at all surprisingly. "let's just-eat" my mom said as she sighed. There was no point in doing anything else because nothing would change

No matter how many times you'll tell Billy something he isn't doing right, he won't understand it anyways.

I put the letter in my pocket to read it later and sat down to eat.

*flashback in california* at chloe's house

El's pov

"you should write to her" chloe said. "are you sure? It's not been a long time since I got back-" I said. "That doesn't matter! Do you think it's better if she thinks you're ignoring her or she thinks you don't want to talk to her?!" chloe said

"I don't know.. I don't think she really cares-plus wouldn't she write first if she cared-" I said but she cut me off. "Of course she cares dummy!" chloe said annoyed

"How do you know?" I asked quietly. "I just do, come on let's be for real, max definitely misses you, no one can say otherwise" she said. I nodded, hoping chloe's right.

"okay fine.." I sighed. "Finally" she said smiling. We kept staring at each other, she kept looking at me as if she's waiting for something. "What?" I asked raising an eyebrow.

"what are you waiting for?" she asked also raising an eyebrow copying me. "What are you talking about-" I asked but then realised. "oh you mean the letter?" I asked

"well yeah duh" she said giggling. "should I write it now?" I asked. She nodded. "Alright one second, I'll get you paper and a pen" she said stood up since it was her room

I nodded and waited. "Come here to my desk so you can write" she said. I nodded and stood up. I stared at the paper not knowing what write

"How should I start? I don't even know what to say!" I said. She sighed. "Whatever you want to say, she's your best friend.. Well not really but yeah-" she said.

My heart dropped at her sentence but I played it off. "I mean, we both know what I want to tell her but we also both know I can't" I said

She nodded in agreement. "I mean yeah and you certainly shouldn't ask that through a letter I think. It's better in person" she said. "yeah I know" o said.

"Just-at least mention something like 'and I would like to talk about what happened in the bathroom when I'll see you again?'" chloe said. "I don't know" she added. "Well, I guess I can do that, won't she find it weird-" I asked

"Jane stop overthinking it's gonna be fine" she said. I nodded and started writing.

Max's pov

After I finished eating I went to my room and the first thing I was planning on doing is read the letter of course

I sat down on my bed. I stared st the unopened letter. I don't even know why I was scared to open it. It's not like a demon would appear.

What if she says anything bad?, I thought. But why would she? You idiot, I thought.

I sighed and finally decided to open it.

Hi maxie, sorry I didn't write earlier.. I really miss you and it's so boring here without you. I do have chloe and Austin but it's not the same. I miss the others too but mostly you. I wish I didn't go to california.. Anyways, how have you been doing? I've been worried if you were okay. Is everything alright there?
Also, I would like to um talk about what happened in the bathroom if you want, in person though. When I see you. I'm not mad at all I just want to talk, so don't worry.
Anyways, I hope to get a letter back! Feel free to send any letter at anytime, I don't want us to have no contact. Letters are the only way to contact each other unfortunately since we can't see each other..

I started to tear up while reading it. For absolutely no reason. I just miss her so much. It hasn't even been this long, why am I being so dramatic? I got nervous when she mentioned the bathroom scene tho
