chapter 72: Concern

Max's pov

El asked me for a sleepover so of course I agreed. I wouldn't want to be alone after this day. (a/n: just a reminder bc I haven't updated in a while🥲:they went to the police station to report Neil after el saw the bruises etc and told hopper with max's consent ofc)

I did ask my mom if she was okay with that,in case she needed someone by her side but she said she didn't mind so she let me go to el's place. Billy would he home anyways. I just hope he doesn't get mad etc.

Anyways, we arrived at el's place. During the ride, el grabbed my hand which caused me to smile. We were both sitting in the backseat so hopper didn't really pay attention to us holding hands. (he doesn't know yet)

"Are you feeling better max?" hopper asked once we got inside. "yeah,thank you so much chief " I said smiling politely. He smiled. "no problem kid and hey, call me hop, you're basically family here. El's your best friend so you mean a lot to us" he said.

I could sense that el got a bit tense because hopper doesn't know we were dating yet but she smiled instead. I nodded to him smiling.

El and I went to her room upstairs. (a/n: I know the byer's house in Hawkins doesn't have a second floor but I noticed I made a mistake so let's pretend it does, also el and will don't share a room now)

It was currently 7 pm. We hadn't eaten yet since we just got back from the police station. We saw Will in the hallway as he frowned confused on why I was there.

"oh hey max! I didn't really expect you here" he said smiling. "hey!-" I said smiling. "yeah we're gonna have a sleepover" el said smiling. We didn't tell him about the whole police station situation. "ohh okay that's great have fun" he said as we muttered a thank you while smiling slightly

We then got into el's room. She immediately grabbed my hand making me smile. I stared at her smiling as she did the same. We stared at each other sweetly for a couple of seconds until I spoke. "It's over" I whispered smiling slightly.

"what?" she asked softly not hearing me completly. "It's over el, my nightmare is over" I said smiling with tears in my eyes from happiness yet relieve. She smiled sqeezing my hand. "yeah it is!" she said smiling.

A tear accidently fell and el noticed and wiped it away with her other hand gently. "you're okay now" she softly said caressing my cheek. I smiled sadly and leaned into it. "thanks to you" I said softly

"Of course, I wouldn't let you get hurt anymore, I-I can't lose you, I know we haven't been dating for a long time but we were best friends but I-I love you max-I don't know if it's too soon, I-I mean we did say the L word before but yeah-" el rumbled romantically yet a bit nervously

I put my other hand on her cheek this time as she kept hers on my jaw gently caressing it. "I know what you mean el, I've loved you since I met you and before dating you but I was too scared to say it-even admit it" I said smiling

She looked at me surprised yet happy and looked down shyly,blushing. I grabbed her by her chin and leaned in for a kiss. She immediately kissed back

After a few seconds we pulled away. We heard joyce calling us for dinner. "Let's go" el said pulling me with her gently since we were still holding hands as we got out of her room.

Hopper must have told Joyce I was here because she didn't seem surprised to see me. "Hey max! How are you honey?" she asked smiling as she was setting the plates on the table. "I'm good,how are you mrs. byers?" I asked smiling back.

"I'm also good,thanks for asking, and hey, call me Joyce honey it's okay" she said as I nodded. "Do you need help?" el asked Joyce. "It's okay sweetheart, thank you" Joyce replied.
