Chapter 73: It's your fault

Max's pov

It was the next day after the station incident. The war is finally over..Neil has been a nightmare for many years. I've been dealing with him this whole time in silence and now it was finally over

El invited me for a sleepover as usual,especially after this difficult day,all I needed was her..just her presence,her hugs,kiss,reassuring me that everything is okay.

I felt bad leaving my mom for a night after that hard day but she told me that it was okay,she wanted el to be with me. Billy is at home anyways. I just hope his reaction isn't violent

My thoughts were suddenly cut off by el calling my name. At that moment we were watching a movie downstairs in the living room,we were alone so we could cuddle without being caught.

We also told Will to stay with us but he politely refused saying he was sleepy. Or maybe he thought it was a girls night because we're..best friends. That's what they think at least

"Max?" el called my name again. I turned to look at her. My head was on her shoulder,her arms around me as my hands were wrapped around her waist.

"What's wrong love?" she asked quietly. I paused not knowing what to say. "I was just..um lost in my thoughts sorty..what happened in the movie-?" I said but she cut me off by grabbing the remote control gently and pausing the movie

"Max..you can talk to me..what's on your mind?" she asked getting her arms off me to grab my hand instead giving it a gentle squeeze.

"I just..can't stop thinking about my mom" I said. She frowned. I could tell she was confused so I elaborated. "I mean..right now is she sad? Happy? Relieved,how is Billy handling it? Is he blaming my mom? I'm just worried about his reaction sorry-" I said

"There's no need to apologize max..I'm sure your mom is okay, Billy..you said he didn't hurt any of you?" she asked. "well not really..just a few harsh grabs and yelling..he got it from his dad apparently but rarely beat me up" I said casually as her eyes widened

"El..love I'm okay now don't worry" I gave her a reassuring smile. She shook her head. "I know..I just wish you didn't get through all that" she said gulping as if trying to hold back her tears. You know that right feeling around your neck? I think you guys get it..

I looked down sadly not meaning to upset her. "Look,we could go to your house first thing in the morning before the giys come?" she suggested as I thought for a second

"pretty sure they'll come early though.." I said. "We can just tell Joyce to inform them in case they come" she said as I nodded. "Good idea".

"and.." she started as she came closer to me,still holding my hand. "I will NOT-" she kissed my forehead. "let anyone nor Billy-" she kissed my cheek. "hurt your or your mom again" she kissed my other cheek as she made eye contact with me

"What did I do to deserve you" I mumbled quietly. "Because you deserve the best..I know i'm not the best but I promise I will always be there for you max..friends don't lie" she said quietly

"but we're not friends.." I whispred quietly as I smirked. She chuckled and rolled her eyes playfully.

*time skip- the next day*

It was 9:30 am. We ended up not finishing the movie because we were both quite tired so we woke up early as well.

I woke up in el's arms.I loved being the little spoon..usually el cuddles me but now it was me. I'm only soft for her. She's my soft spot and I can't resist it..I love her too much

Eventually we both got up and went downstairs .We knew Joyce was a morning person so of course she was awake.

She was sitting on the couch in the living room drinking coffee. Hopper already left for work a few hours ago. "Hey girls,why are you up so early?" joyce frowned confused
