Chapter 56
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The thunder never seemed to stop in Boston. It roared and beat about the cobblestone as if mocking the agitation of the heavens. Again they were chased by horses, whose riders had guns baited with burning lead. The shots bit into their skin as they could feel the familiar ache of water blessed by God.
“God damn these infernal Hunters!”
“Shut-up and run!”
The four split up and the deadly horsemen split with them. Two followed Austin and Amber and the remaining four followed Drake and Isabella. Though they ran at stop speed the horses kept their stride surpassing unnatural paces.
Isabella turned her head and gasped as she saw them. One horse, a black stallion, was close enough to her that she could feel the heat of its breath on the back of her neck. But that’s not all that alarmed her.
The socket of its eye was empty and it stared at her with one rotting eye. Its mouth sneered at her with lipless teeth and the muscle of its shoulder was only bone, stripped of flesh. Instead of it gurgled with fluid filled lungs and reeking dribble fell from the hole in its side. Its legs however, were strong and it pounded after them, its hooves cracked the cobble stone as if it were glass and it paid no mind to the carts and signs, and people it crashed into as it pursued them. Even though debris tore into what little flesh it had left on its body, the horse didn’t care.
These weren’t your average horses.
An arm wrapped itself around her waist and she was yanked swiftly into an alleyway. The horses skidded as they tried to stop and turn around. Drake held her to him as if she was a doll and she could feel his fingers digging into her side.
“What are you doing?!”
“Saving your ass!”
“I was doing fine without you, now put me down!”
Without warning he stopped and promptly dropped her to the ground.
“Why are you so damn slow?”
“Shut-up! Have you ever tried to run for your life in a hoop skirt?”
“Take the damn thing off then.”
“No way!”
“I found them!”
One of the horsemen started galloping towards them at top speed. Drake turned to Isabella and guide sarcastically bowed to her.
“May I?”
“You’re going to do it anyway…”
She was scooped up and slung over his shoulder. He, the faster of the two, blasted out of the alley and into the back roads. The other horsemen had caught up to them and were pelting their lethal shots at them. A loud crack rang out as one passed right through Drakes leg, snapping his bone in two and passing out the other side. He cursed as he fell forward, causing them both to slam into the unforgiving ground below.
“Drake!”
Isabella crawled over to him as he rolled over in pain.
“Get out of here you idiot…” He grumbled.
“It’s too late for that.”
They were surrounded. One of the Hunters jumped off his horse and walked up to her.
“So you’re one of those vampire brats, eh? Much cuter than I’d thought you’d be.”
He unsheathed his sword and pressed the tip of the blade to her chin.
“My name is Immanuel. Anything else you’d like to say before you die?”
Isabella looked at the blade so close to her neck. She could practically smell the retched water poured onto the blade. In its shining surface she saw a familiar face staring back at her. That’s when she got an idea.
“Yes, I’d like to say one last thing. Kiss my ass!”
She grabbed the sharp blade and with bloodied hands wrested it out of the man’s hand and threw it at her fallen comrade. It landed inches from his nose and he stared at its shining terror in surprise.
Immanuel grabbed her by her hair and yanked her back towards him.
“Stupid girl…”

“My chest, I can’t breathe, can we please stop running!”
“You goddamn yellow bellied dolt! Keep up or I’ll leave ya to die!’
Austin and Amber had managed to duck into a building forcing the riders off of their monstrous horses. The store they were in seemed to be deserted and they seemed to have been run off in a shady part of town.
“My body hurts!”
“Do you ever shut-up? They’re gonna find us you know.”
“I doubt it.”
They had managed to find an empty crate in the darkest corner of the room, and were now waiting for the threat to overlook them.
“You want your hand broken?”
“What? No.”
“Then get it off of my ass.”
“There ain’t that much space you know. Why don’t you find another place to hide?”
“Why don’t you?!”
“Shush!”
They heard something rustle and immediately went silent. Footsteps echoed around them. They held their breaths as they stopped in front of the crate. Amber motioned in the darkness of the crate and Austin shrugged.
“What?’ he whispered harshly in response.
“Give me your pistol.”
“I don’t carry a pistol.”
