Chapter 69

-------------------------

Days passed by and Adriana noticed how empty the streets of her village were.

All of the Snake people had fled. Those who had survived The Great Decay came and a huge brawl ensued between them and the humans that lived here.

The snake-men decided that humans couldn't be trusted anymore and blamed the whole endeavor on them. The humans likewise, mourning for their dead, blamed the massacre on those barbaric bloodsuckers. It was their Dominion and their fault.

So the Snake-men blamed the Humans and the latter blamed the former. There was a lot of blame and not enough answers. Needless to say, it was a quick brawl with an obvious winner and those winners packed up and left.

Adriana sat on the stoop of an abandoned blacksmith's shop.  Imagine not knowing your blacksmith was a vampire until he had gone. Oh well, it didn't matter because there would be no customers missing him.  As far as she knew Adriana was the only human brave enough to walk outside. The others feared the revenge of the leeches and came out as little as was humanly possible. Her own mother refused to join her outside and forbade her to enter the house.

So, Adriana was given the chore of bringing necessities to each house and watching for any pale faces returning into the city. She pretty much fended for herself.

It was a rather uneventful job.

"Adriana?"

Then again…

Adriana stood to see two familiar faces staring at her in confusion. She knew that the handsome one was called Lewis but she couldn't remember the girl's name. Maybe it was Isabel or something…whatever.

"I'm surprised you remember my name."

"I remember all the beautiful ladies I meet."

He took her hand and kissed it. She giggled and noticed at once the few...additions to the siblings’ party.

"Who are these people?"

Isabella was probably the only one on a horse (even though her leg had healed she wasn't able to walk as fast as the others would have liked) and Onyx and Drake stood on either side of her.  Nathaniel and The Second lagged behind chattering away with Carman who had her arms entwined with theirs.

"You already know my sister, this here is Onyx and the man beside her is Drake.”

Adriana's eyes widened.

"You're Onyx?"

"Aye, Lass."

"Wow, a real pirate! You're much taller than I thought you'd be, but you're really pretty!"

"Thank you."

"The three behind us are Nathaniel, our mother Carman and our Second. Nathaniel is also a pirate."

"Wow! Where have you two been?

Lewis smiled shaking his head.

"That's too long a story to say. But, what has happened here?"

Adriana looked about and shrugged.

"What are you talking about?"

"The village...it's so quiet. Last time we were here the streets were so packed you couldn't ride a horse through them."

"Oh, that. A lot of stuff happened since you left you know."

"Really?"

"Yeah, all of the snake men left this place and all of the humans have retreated indoors. All of them that survived anyway."
