Chapter 29
----------------------------------------------------
Lewis stood to his feet as the shrill scream beat against his ear drums.
It sounded like a woman. A very frightened woman.
He turned toward his captive hunter and took a step forward, forgetting the delicate nature of their situation.
The boards beneath his feet creaked as more water rushed in. He quickly drew back and the stream turned into a calm trickle.
"Be careful! I don't think I'm ready to drown yet."
The hunter said visibly agitated and stressed. The woman screamed again and this time it was closer to the trapdoor leading to the top deck.
However, her scream was cut off mid-stride and the sound of a vicious snarling ensued. The woman's screams were heard no longer.
Lewis decided it was time to get up on deck.
He reached down and grabbed the ropes that were tied tightly around his prisoner and hoisted him up over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.
"Just what the hell do you think you are do--"
Lewis threw the hunter across the floor and he landed hard by the ladder leading up to the deck.
Almost immediately a harsh cracking sound erupted and water spewed from the floor boards.
The hunter began to panic, only to be scooped up again into the arms of his capture who had braved the floor boards.
Water gushed into the ship and Lewis could feel the slight pull of the ship sinking slightly.
But he didn't grieve. There was no longer a point in saving the ship.
There were monsters a board
He hoisted his prisoner over his shoulder and climbed the ladder taking the rungs two by two until he reached the deck.
"Jesus on the cross..."
It was horrifying.
Those who had been killed were alive again. They were badly disfigured do to the brutality in which they were killed.
One had a dagger lodged in his eye, another had her throat ripped clean out, and yet another walked about the ship missing his head.
Directly in front of him he saw two male vampires eating the body of a young woman who blankly stared into the sky.
"She's fresh."
Lewis thought as he noticed the color in her cheeks. The two creatures tore at her flesh, crunching in her hard bones as blood oozed from their mouths.
Lewis set the hunter down and quickly undid his bonds.
He grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him close so that he could speak barely above a whisper.
"You are my prisoner. I want you alive, but if you run I can't promise I get to you before they do."
He pointed to the two feasting on the corpse.
"I'm not stupid."
The hunter said, grasping irritably at Lewis' fist.
"Let me go already!"
He hissed.
Lewis let him go and watched as the living dead began to circle them, curious expressions on their twisted faces.
The one nearest him gurgled as he pushed up his bottom teeth to sneer at him. They looked as sharp as razors.
"Bloody hell! And I thought your lot were trouble!"
The hunter exclaimed as he pressed his back against Lewis'.
Lewis said nothing as he let the hidden daggers inside his sleeve fall into the palms of his hands.
"More than you know."
Then came the dead.
*******************************
The world around her was dark and she could feel the ache of her body as she lay in silence.
She wanted to get up but everything hurt. She had died once. Murdered would be the better word for it. Her killer had told her that there was nothing like the first time.
Although that was true, he had never thought she would experience death more than one time.
She was so tired.
She'd just rest for a bit.
"Onyx...?"
Just let her stag in this dark world for a while.
"Onyx?"
Why not just stay here forever....?"
"Onyx?!"
She received a monstrous blow to cheek and her eyes snapped open and she sat up immediately.
She stared wide eyed into the eyes of the princess.
"Isabella..."
"Captain! You're alive!"
Onyx looked about the ship.
"Jonathan...."
"You got him captain! Farley threw his body overboard."
"That's good."
Then she thought about something and moved to stand up.
"Your brother..."
"Farley is getting a boat ready now."
She heaved herself up with the aid of the princess and tried to walk towards the dinghy, but someone grabbed her roughly around the arm, almost making her fall over again.
"Oh no ya don't!"
She turned to see Nathaniel waving his finger at her.
"You are coming with me."
"But...."
"You really aren't in a position to argue with me. Leave the rescue to the able bodies hands.
Onyx nodded rolling her eyes. She turned towards the princess that was staring up at her with an anguished and worrisome look.
"I'm fine. Just a little broken. Nate will fix me up."
The young girl looked relived.
"Where is the permit child?"
Isabella handed her the slip of paper she had hid in her bustier.
"I'm going to get my brother now. You rest okay?"
"You? How come she can go but I can't?"
The two women turned to Nathaniel who was beginning to lose his patience.
"Because you're bleeding and she is not! Let's go patch up what's left of ya."
She was pulled away before she could utter anymore protests.
"Don't worry! We'll be back before you know it!"
The princess yelled happily to her as she ran to met Farley by the boat.
"Nathaniel?"
"What?"
"What's that smell?"
"Decay."
"Where's it coming from?"
"Your ship Captain...your ship."
