It's been a few days ever since Alpha's conversation with Elijah. And ever since, Elijah hasn't been causing any trouble for me. Which is strange, since he's always causing problems.
But, I'm not complaining. These few days have probably been the best days ever. I've been able to do my chores swiftly without difficulty so Alpha didn't had any reason to punish me. And because Elijah and my friends hasn't been picking on me, my wounds have been healing nicely.
My hand can move for the most part, but it still hurts from time to time like if I hold something really heavy or someone puts pressure on it. Still, all is good.
Alpha might reward me for being a good girl if I keep this up. Just thinking about brings a little smile to my face.
"Girl! Do those pile of laundry." A heavy basket of clothes dropped right in-front of me. My head bowed. "Yes ma'am." There was a scoff before the woman walked away.
My head lifted slightly to watch her leave before turning to the basket. A sigh escaped me, seeing all the clothes that had to be washed.
Getting off my knees and putting the boots I was shining away, grabbed a big bucket, the washboard, soap, and the basket full of clothes, I headed outside.
Filling the bucket with water from the pump, I took a seat on a tree stump and began cleaning the clothes with the soap. Doing one at a time as the cold water sent shocks of pain through my bad hand.
Ignoring it, I continued to scrub the clothes with the washboard. Water splashed on me but it'll dry up soon so no reason to cause a fuss. Alpha won't like that.
Alpha likes it when I'm quiet. Luna too. They said that my voice was annoying to hear and if I'm not responding to something a pack member said, I should just stay quiet and not say a thing.
When I was younger, Luna sew my mouth shut once because I wasn't being a good girl and kept on bothering everyone with my crying. Especially her.
It was like that until I learned to be a good girl and not annoy anyone with my stupid crying and whining. Alpha was the one to cut the string off. He even praised me and gave me some of his leftovers! He's so kind and generous.
Alpha is a good man. I don't know why people like to cause trouble for him.
Hearing a twig snap, I paused in my cleaning. Lifting my head and looking to the side, my eyes wandered. Looking for what made that sound.
It's past midday so it couldn't be any of the hunters or teens. The people on patrol don't come back until their shift is over which was near breakfast and dinner time. Everyone else is doing their own things, can't be them either.
They rarely come to the back of the pack house since they know I'll be there. So who is it?
Looking around once more and finding nothing, I shifted my focus back on the clothes and went back to scrubbing them. After a while, another twig snapped.
My head shot up this time and fear started to creep up on me. Staring at where the noise was coming from, I began to observe at every little thing that moved.
Waiting much longer than before if anyone was there, I hesitantly went back to my task. But my pace quickened and it didn't take long to scrub all the clothes.
Finished with that, they were quickly hung up on the lines to dry and I took everything back inside. A sensitive relief came over me the second my back was against the closed door.
"Is something wrong, Iris?" Flinching, I turned to see Maya standing in the doorway of the kitchen. My head lowered in a bow. "No young mistress. I'm sorry if I disturbed you."
Maya sighed, taking a few steps towards me and gently took my bad hand into hers. "You got your bandages wet." My head lowered even more. "I'm sorry, young mistress. Please forgive me."
"There's nothing you need to apologize for, Iris. I just have to change your bandages." Maya spoke softly but hearing those words made me anxious. "You don't have to do that, young mistress. I'm fine."
"Like I said a few days ago, Iris. You're my little sister, it's my job to take care of you." Taking the bucket from me and placing it on the ground, Maya guided me upstairs into one of the bathrooms. Luckily no one saw us.
No one from the pack should see Maya touching a filthy runt like me. It'll be disgraceful to her.
Lightly pushing me to take a seat on the closed, toilet seat, I watched as Maya rummaged under the sink before taking out a small First Aid kit.
She took a seat on the tub, placing the Kit to the side of her and opened it. Taking out some bandages before turning to me.
Gently taking my hand again, Maya carefully unwrapped the wet bandages as I watched her. Unable to stop her even if I wanted to.
Being a higher rank than me, Maya can do what she wants and I have to let her. Even if it gets me in trouble.
"So, what happened with Dad and Elijah? The two of them have been oddly quiet lately and been in dad's office a lot. Barely leaving." Glancing up at Maya, I looked back at my hand.
"Alpha said something about a Mad Hound and rogues that were near the pack's border. They seemed really worried. Alpha even said that he was going to contact the pack's allies to help."
Maya said nothing, tossing away the wet bandages then put on the new ones. "Did dad say anything else?" I shook my head. She tsk.
It was silent the rest of the time. When Maya was finished, she pulled away from me and I studied my bandaged hand.
Looking back at Maya, she seemed deep in thought. When she realized I was staring, she gave a forced smile. "Thanks for telling me. Iris. I'll you later."
Watching as Maya put the First Aid Kit away, she soon left me alone in the bathroom.
