Kathy sat in the corner of the room again.
The little girl watched her from her bed, blue eyes— that appeared grey in the dark— open wide with confusion.
She slowly climbed down the bed, making sure the blonde woman didn't notice her, and sat down beside her. "Kathy?" She gently called out.
The woman took a steady breath and looked at her, smiling. "Yes, darling?"
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Nothing. Just resting." She ran a hand through her hair, taming her bedhead.
The girl frowned, looking down at her closed fist, and then looking up again. "Why do you always stare at that?"
"At what?"
The girl put her little hand on the fist, but then immediately took it back. Kathy laughed. "What happened?"
"Something.. moved?"
Kathy shook her head, extending it towards her. "Try again."
A bit hesitant, the girl tried again. It didn't move like she had expected it to. But instead..
"It's like a heart!" She squeaked, moving closer and putting her ear against her fist. She got up and tried to open her fist. "Do you have a heart in there?"
"No," she laughed again. In her palm rested a pendant— a black onyx stone dangling from a silver chain.
The girl tilted her head, and Kathy could only be amused at her confusion. She didn't stop her when she took the pendant into her little fist, making her gasp as it beat like a heart.
"You were right. It is like a heart."
She looked at her, eyes blown with surprise. "But.. but who's heart is it?" She whispered.
Kathy sighed. "It's my daughter's." A sad smile was etched on her lips. "She lives far.. far away from me. I have her heartbeat in here so I know if she's doing well."
The girl didn't understand how, but still nodded. "Is she nice?"
"My daughter?" Kathy shrugged. "I have not met her for years."
"I bet she is nice." The girl nodded confidently. And the woman smiled, not saying whatever that was on her mind. "I wanna be friends with her."
"You will be, I promise."
The little girl felt accomplished. Then asked, "Can I wear it? It's very pretty!"
Kathy hesitated, but the girl didn't let her speak. "Pretty please? I'll take care of it!"
"You can— you can!" Kathy cut her off with a nervous chuckle. "Um.. you know? I have another one. So we can both have one."
The girl let out an excited cheer, letting Kathy take the one from her hand. She stood up and walked in the room beside their own. The girl didn't follow her.
