Gred and Forge
On Christmas morning, Calli woke to the faint sound of the Black Lake lapping against the dungeon windows.
For a moment she lay still beneath the blankets, staring up at the dark green hangings of her bed. The Slytherin dormitory was quiet, eerily so. Nearly everyone had gone home for the holidays.
Including Lucy Winterbourne and Stella Addington.
Calli exhaled slowly and pushed herself upright.
When Professor Severus Snape had come through the common room earlier in December with the parchment for students staying at Hogwarts, she had signed her name almost immediately. She had told her father she would remain at school to practice magic, perfectly reasonable, since Hogwarts allowed students to use their wands.
In truth, she had simply preferred the cold quiet of the Slytherin dungeon to going home.
Especially this year.
Theo had definitely written to their father about the Quidditch match.
About her flying across the pitch to steady Harry's broom.
Calli could already imagine the letter.
Helping Gryffindor's Seeker. And said seeker being Harry Potter...
Her father would not be pleased.
Summer would be unpleasant.
But that was months away.
She swung her legs out of bed and dressed in a soft knit dress, pulling on her slippers before stepping into the common room.
The Christmas tree stood near the fireplace, decorated with silver and green ornaments that reflected the lake light. Beneath it were only a few presents.
Two were labeled in familiar handwriting.
From Lucy and Stella.
Calli smiled faintly. She would open them later.
There was nothing from home.
She hadn't expected anything.
After setting the gifts aside, she headed toward the Great Hall for breakfast.
She had barely stepped into the corridor when a voice suddenly shouted,
"There you are!"
Calli jumped.
Fred Weasley was hurrying toward her, grinning wildly.
"Fred, what are-"
"Shh!" He cut her off, grabbing her wrist. "Quiet. We don't want Filch rushing here."
Before she could protest, he pulled her down the corridor at a brisk pace.
In his other hand he clutched a sheet of parchment she immediately recognized as the Marauder's Map.
Fred glanced down at it while walking, checking the moving dots.
"No one nearby." He muttered.
"Fred." Calli tried again. "Where are we-"
"You'll see."
A few minutes later they reached the portrait hole of Gryffindor Tower.
The Fat Lady eyed Calli suspiciously.
"Password?"
"Baubles." Fred whispered quickly.
The portrait swung open.
