By the time dinner rolled around, the entire Great Hall seemed to be talking about Harry's shouting match with Professor Umbridge.
Apparently Calli wasn't the only one who had challenged her.
Unfortunately, most of the whispers weren't about Umbridge.
They were about Harry.
"He probably imagined it."
"My brother says You-Know-Who isn't really back."
"I heard Cedric just got lost in the maze."
Calli gripped her fork tighter.
Another voice drifted over from further down the table.
"My cousin reckons Diggory probably died from fright after seeing something in there."
Calli was on her feet before she even realised she'd stood up.
"I swear to Merlin-"
Lucy grabbed one arm.
Stella caught the other.
"You sit down." Lucy ordered.
"He was murdered." Calli hissed, glaring at the fourth year. "He didn't die because he got scared."
The younger student shrank slightly but still looked unconvinced.
Calli looked ready to march over there anyway.
"I'm going to feed him a whole piece of Nosebleed Nougat."
Lucy blinked.
"Without the antidote."
"Oh."
"That's worse."
"He deserves it."
"Calli."
"I'm serious."
"I know you are."
Stella exchanged a look with Lucy.
"Come on."
Before Calli could think of another way to threaten the unfortunate fourth year, the two girls were already steering her firmly towards the doors.
They had barely left the Great Hall when footsteps hurried after them.
"There you are." Fred called.
George wasn't far behind.
"What happened?"
Lucy pointed back towards the Hall.
"Idiots happened."
Calli pulled herself free and immediately began pacing.
"How is this happening?" She demanded, running both hands through her hair. "How is everyone so willing to believe the Ministry? They all saw Cedric's body! They believed Dumbledore at the end of last term!"
She turned sharply.
"And that woman!"
She threw her hands into the air.
"She stands there smiling while telling us we don't need to know defensive magic!"
Students walking past gave them curious looks before deciding they wanted no part of whatever was happening.
"They're just accepting it!"
She spun around again.
"It's like nobody wants to think for themselves anymore."
