Calli caught Hermione just before she disappeared into the Great Hall, grabbing her lightly by the arm. Stella and Lucy were right behind her.
"Did you see the decree?"
Hermione's expression immediately hardened.
"Yes."
"So either Umbridge has developed the ability to read minds, or somebody talked."
"No one talked."
Calli frowned.
Hermione lowered her voice.
"I'd know."
That stopped Calli.
"How?"
Hermione glanced around before leaning closer.
"The parchment everyone signed at the Hog's Head. I jinxed it."
There was a beat of silence.
Calli stared at her.
Lucy stared at her.
Stella stared at her.
"You what?" Lucy whispered.
"If anyone tells Umbridge about the group, they'll know they've made a mistake."
Hermione briefly explained what she'd done.
Calli's eyebrows climbed higher and higher.
Then a slow, impressed smile spread across her face.
"Blimey, Hermione." Hermione looked slightly apprehensive. "I admire the way you think."
Lucy nodded vigorously.
"Remind me never to betray you."
"Same." Stella agreed.
Calli folded her arms.
"Would've been nice to know I was signing something jinxed."
Hermione's face immediately flushed bright red.
"Well, I knew you wouldn't betray us, so I didn't see the point."
Calli stared at her for another moment before nodding.
"Right you are."
She turned towards the Great Hall doors.
"Now let's see if anyone's face is covered in boils."
Lucy brightened considerably.
They entered together.
Breakfast was already underway, and Calli immediately began scanning faces.
Hufflepuff first.
"Where is he?" Lucy muttered.
"Don't make it obvious." Stella warned.
"I'm not."
"You're standing on your toes."
"I'm short."
"There." Calli murmured.
Zacharias Smith was sitting halfway down the Hufflepuff table, talking to Ernie Macmillan.
All four girls stared.
His face was completely clear.
Not a single blemish.
Lucy visibly deflated.
"Oh, come on."
Calli snorted.
