"If we get murdered by an angry librarian ghost, I'm never forgiving you." Lucy whispered.

Calli glanced over her shoulder.

"You'll be dead."

"I'll find a way."

The two girls crept along the lower floor of the Restricted Section, keeping close together as they moved between the towering shelves.

"Why did I let you convince me to do this anyway?" Lucy whispered.

"Because I told you I'd do your homework for a week."

"Oh, right."

Lucy considered that.

"Worth it."

Calli rolled her eyes.

Harry's Invisibility Cloak was tucked securely beneath her arm. They'd used it to slip past the rope and descend unnoticed, but Calli had taken it off once they were safely among the lower shelves. Trying to search book titles while two people stumbled around beneath one cloak had proved nearly impossible.

She'd already finished one of the books she'd taken during her last visit and returned it to roughly where she'd found it.

The other two?

She was keeping those indefinitely.

Or until she was absolutely certain she'd squeezed every useful piece of information out of them.

Whichever came first.

"I still can't believe you're here to steal more books." Lucy murmured.

"Borrowing."

"Without permission."

"Extended borrowing."

"That's stealing."

"You're currently an accomplice, so I'd be careful."

Lucy scowled.

They continued deeper.

The farther they walked, the less light reached them.

Lanterns were scattered along the walls, but several had burned so low that they cast more shadow than light. Dust floated through the weak glow, and the shelves seemed taller down here, packed tightly enough that some of the books had been wedged sideways into whatever space remained.

Lucy glanced behind them.

"Why is it colder?"

"Underground."

"No. It's ghost cold."

Calli stopped.

"Don't say that."

"You brought me here!"

"And I'm already frightened enough without commentary."

Lucy looked scandalised.

"You said he wasn't scary."

"I said he hadn't done anything."

"That's not the same thing!"

Calli turned towards another shelf.

"Just look for anything about defensive enchantments, curse creation, magical barriers, Ministry magic-"

Lucy suddenly grabbed her arm.

Calli nearly screamed.

"What?"

Lucy pointed.

At first Calli saw nothing.

A pale, silvery face was protruding directly through the books on the shelf beside her.
