Cantankerus wrote again two days later.
Calli recognised the owl before it had even reached the Slytherin table.
She watched it descend towards her with another cream envelope clutched in its talons, the dark green Nott seal unmistakable against the parchment.
Lucy looked up from her porridge.
"Oh."
Stella followed her gaze.
Calli continued buttering her toast.
The owl landed directly beside her plate.
The envelope dropped onto the table.
Calli looked at it.
Callidora Nott.
Her father's handwriting.
She could imagine what was inside without breaking the seal.
She hadn't answered his first letter.
Hadn't responded by his demanded deadline.
And apparently Cantankerus Nott had discovered that ordering his daughter to answer him did not magically produce a response.
Calli picked up the envelope.
"Are you going to open it?" Stella asked.
"No."
Lucy blinked.
"No?"
"No."
Calli slipped it into her bag.
She finished breakfast.
Went to Transfiguration.
Sat through Charms.
Completed her Head Girl duties.
And that evening, when she returned to the Slytherin common room, the envelope was still unopened.
Calli crossed directly towards the fireplace.
A few students occupied the armchairs nearby. Someone was playing chess. Two younger Slytherins were arguing over homework.
Calli pulled the envelope from her bag.
She looked once at the Nott seal.
Then tossed it into the flames.
Lucy made a small noise behind her.
The parchment curled almost immediately.
The dark green wax melted.
Calli watched until her name blackened and disappeared.
She never learned what the letter said.
She didn't particularly care.
The second arrived next morning.
This one found her at breakfast with Fred.
Fred had barely sat down at the Slytherin table, completely ignoring the glares he was getting, when another familiar owl swooped towards them.
She sighed.
Fred followed her gaze.
"Again?"
"Apparently."
The envelope landed between them.
Fred looked down.
Then at Calli.
Calli picked up her toast.
Fred waited.
She took a bite.
