A Horse?
The wind near the lake was cold.
Rain lashed sideways through the clearing near the edge of the forest.
The same clearing.
The one from the full moon.
Calli stood at the forest's edge, heart pounding.
Now came the final spell.
The moon reflected faintly across the storm-dark water.
Her voice trembled.
"Amato Animo Animato Animagus."
She drank the blood-red potion in one go.
"Please don't turn into some weird creepy human-animal hybrid." Lucy muttered under her breath.
Stella elbowed her sharply in the ribs.
"Lucy, you're not helping."
Magic surged through Calli's body.
Her breath hitched.
Bones shifted.
Pain lanced through her spine and wings burst outward.
The transformation hit like fire.
Her heart slammed violently in her chest.
Two heartbeats.
Louder.
Faster.
Her vision warped.
Everything felt wrong.
Her body wasn't her body anymore.
Panic surged.
She stumbled backward, skeletal wings flaring instinctively as thunder cracked overhead.
The unfamiliar weight of them made her rear suddenly, a sharp, startled cry ripping from her throat.
Lucy jumped back.
"Okay! That's new!"
Stella stared in stunned silence.
A massive black creature now stood where Calli had been.
Tall.
Dark.
Skeletal wings stretching wide.
White eyes glowing in the storm-lit clearing.
A Thestral.
The creature jerked its head wildly.
Disoriented.
Panicked.
Its wings lashed once against the air.
Branches snapped nearby.
Lucy raised both hands immediately.
"Calli!"
But the Thestral recoiled again, breathing fast.
Then,
CRASH.
Two redheads burst through the trees.
"What are you three up to-"
Fred stopped mid-sentence.
George skidded beside him.
Both froze.
Standing in the clearing was a creature neither of them expected to see.
Tall.
